Nowak, Carrion Earn National Recognition
04/24/23 | Acrobatics & Tumbling
EUGENE, Ore. — Senior Karly Nowak and junior Makena Carrion bring with them positive buzz into championship weekend, as both garnered All-America honors days before the NCATA National Championship weekend.
Nowak featured as Oregon's top option in the aerial tumbling pass, scoring a career-best 9.90 in the upset victory over Azusa Pacific on February 17. The Howell, N.J. native became the eighth UO athlete to take home NCATA Athlete of the Week honors following her overall performance against the Cougars. The senior competed as a base, top and tumbler throughout the Ducks' six meets, contributing in all six events.
Carrion joins her teammate in earning national recognition. The Rossmoor, Calif. native played a crucial role in helping Oregon improve overall scores in the compulsory, pyramid and toss events in the second year under head coach Taylor Susnara. The junior was an integral piece of the open pyramid heat, leading the Ducks to five scores of 9.85 or better, including four of 9.90 or better. Carrion competed as a top and tumbler throughout the season.
In addition to the announcement of this year's All-Americans, Nowak and 21 other UO student-athletes were recognized for their academic achievements on this year's NCATA Honor Roll: Alena Aucker, Kaylie Barrera, Davee Birch, Haley Ellis, Mari Fukutomi, Alexis Giardina, Bethany Glick, Emilie Henningsen, Morgan Hood, Nicole Jackson, Mallory Kent, Bailee Lamson, Gabby Lange, Camille Mantoani, Caelin Niebergall, Morgan Sweeney, Sydney Szarka, Lindsey Tarr, Alexis Weller, Zoe Williams and Cami Wilson. The NCATA Academic Honor Roll includes all active Acrobatics & Tumbling student-athletes with a cumulative grade-point average of 3.30 or higher.
The Ducks return to the mat this week to kick off the NCATA National Championships. Oregon is back in action on Thursday, as the second-seeded Ducks takes on No. 7 Frostburg State in West Liberty, W. Va. at 10:30 a.m. PT. The meet will be streamed on ESPN+.
