Ranked Doubles Win Highlights Ducks’ Day

EUGENE, Ore. – Sophie Luescher and Uxia Martinez Moral's upset of the nation's No. 4 doubles team highlighted No. 43 Oregon's 6-1 Pac-12 setback against 37th-ranked California Sunday at the Student Tennis Center.
Oregon (11-7, 4-4) cruised to an early 1-0 lead, which was clinched by Luescher/Martinez Moral's 6-2 win at the top spot over Cal's Jessica Alsola and Katja Wiersholm. The win marked the Ducks' first win over a ranked opponent of the spring season.
At the No. 2 doubles position, Jo-Yee Chan and Ares Teixido Garcia eased to a 6-0 win over Haley Giavara and Valentine Ivanov. Chan and Teixido Garcia won their third straight doubles match and push their dual doubles record to a team-leading 12-1.
"I thought we came out on all three (doubles) courts playing really well," said head coach Courtney Nagle. "I think it was really helpful having Jo-Yee back in the doubles. Her and Ares have been great all year so for them to roll through their set 6-0 really helped the other two teams to get in strong position. As for Uxia and Sophie, that's a great team that's done really well all year and they've been right there with a lot of really good teams so it was great to see them get the win."
The Bears (8-7, 5-2) went on to win all six singles matches, with five being decided in straight sets. Martinez Moral, playing at the fourth spot in the lineup, took the opening set off Ivanov, 6-4, before Ivanov leveled the match with a 6-3 second-set win. The match was decided by a third-set tiebreaker, with Ivanov coming away with a 10-7 win.
Oregon and California entered the weekend in a third-place tie in the Pac-12 standings. With the win, Cal is now alone in third while the Ducks sit in a tie for sixth with UCLA. Cal marked the Ducks' third straight opponent ranked in the nation's top 40 and seventh ranked foe overall this spring.
"I think we have to keep getting better, but also we have to bring better energy throughout the whole match," Nagle added. "Doubles was great, but singles left a little bit to be desired. Hopefully we'll have Jo-Yee back next week and we'll make some good progress. It's going to be senior weekend and that's always a fun weekend. We always do a lot of fun things pre-senior match, so it's always a special weekend."
The Ducks finish the regular season next weekend with home matches against UCLA (Friday) and USC (Sunday, Senior Day) at the Student Tennis Center.
