Ducks Drop Midweek Rivalry Game
05/02/23 | Baseball
The No. 17 Ducks (30-14) scored all six of their runs in the first four innings, but the Beavers (31-13) responded with 10 runs in those frames and added another in the sixth. Oregon was held to just four hits, including three singles, over the final five innings.
How it Happened: The Ducks quickly jumped out to a 2-0 lead on a two-run home run by Drew Cowley, the reigning Pac-12 and Collegiate Baseball player of the week. Cowley took OSU starter Justin Thornsteinson deep for his 11th home run of the season and Oregon's 75th on the year, tying the program single-season team record for homers set in 2022.
After the Beavers got a run back in the bottom of the first, the Ducks loaded the bases in the top of the second on a single and a pair of walks, and Riku Nishida came through with an RBI single that ricocheted off the pitcher to make it a 3-1 ballgame.
Two hit-by-pitches, an error and a single plated three Beavers in the bottom of the second to give OSU a 4-3 lead. The Ducks again moved back in front in the top of the third after doubles by Drew Smith and Tanner Smith came around on a Bryce Boettcher two-run single, but Oregon State responded with a five-run bottom half to chase UO starter Jackson Pace (2-2) and take the lead for good.
Colby Shade plated Nishida with an RBI double in the fourth, but OSU got the run back in the bottom half and added to its lead with a solo home run in the sixth. The Oregon State trio of Tyler Mejia, Aiden Jimenez and Ben Ferrer combined for six scoreless frames in relief while allowing just four hits with nine strikeouts.
Notable: Shade finished 2-for-4 with two doubles, and both Nishida and Tanner Smith also had two hits … Shade notched his 13th multi-hit game of the season, and fourth in the last five contests … Nishida produced his fourth consecutive multi-hit game and 15th of the season while extending his hitting streak to 10 games … Tanner Smith extended his Oregon all-time records for hits (283), doubles (64) and multi-hit games (81) while recording his 16th multi-hit game this year … Cowley is now tied with Sabin Ceballos for second on the club with 11 home runs, one behind Jacob Walsh … Ceballos – who leads the Ducks this year in RBI (47) and OPS (1.098) – missed his second straight game … Dylan McShane and Jacob Hughes each threw a scoreless inning in relief.
Up Next: The Ducks will head to Los Angeles this weekend for a three-game series at USC beginning on Friday at 6:30 p.m. PT.
