WESTFIELD, Ind. — The Oregon women's golf team will look to bounce back with a strong showing on moving day after opening the 2023 NCAA Westfield Regional with a 6-over 294 on Monday at The Club at Chatham Hills.
No. 8 ranked Oregon, the 2-seed in the 12-team field, sits in 10th place after the first 18 holes of play. The top five teams at the end of Wednesday's final round will advance to the 2023 NCAA Championships in Scottsdale (May 19-24).
Tulsa leads the field at 9-under par, followed by No. 5 Mississippi State (-8), Michigan (-5), No. 20 Iowa State (-2) and Oregon State (-2).
Senior Briana Chacon led Oregon with a 1-under 71, but was the only Duck to finish under par on day one.
How it Happened: Chacon got off to a great start, making back-to-back birdies at No. 4 and No. 5 and adding another at No. 13 to get to 3 under without a bogey. But back-to-back bogeys followed at No. 15 and No. 16, and Chacon finished with a pair of pars to end her day with a 71. It was Chacon's 11th round of par-or-better this season, giving her the most on the team.
Chacon's 1-under day puts her in a tie for 13th overall, four strokes behind Mississippi State's Julia Lopez Ramirez (-5) for the lead.
Juniors Hsin-Yu (Cynthia) Lu and Ashleigh Park both came in two strokes behind Chacon with 1-over 73s. Lu started her day with a birdie and made an eagle on No. 7, but three bogeys and just one birdie on the back nine brought her to 1 over. Park made two birdies in her first three holes and a third at No. 13 while carding four bogeys in her return to the lineup after missing the Pac-12 Championships due to a minor injury.
Freshman Anika Varma and junior Minori Nagano both shot a 5-over 77 to round out Oregon's counting scores.
