Football Practice Recap: Aug. 8
08/08/23 | Football, @GoDucksMoseley
The Ducks held their first practice of this preseason in full pads on Tuesday afternoon.
The Oregon football team was in full pads for the first time this preseason when the Ducks hit the practice fields Tuesday afternoon.
It was a practice with a couple of notable figures in attendance — on the sidelines, Phil Knight, and in uniform with the football team, elite UO track and field sprinter Micah Williams. Williams recently joined the football team for practices and was added to the roster Tuesday.
After practice, UO head coach Dan Lanning, linebacker Jeffrey Bassa and receiver Kyler Kasper met with media. Video of those interviews is embedded below.
Some highlights from coach Lanning …
On the first practice in full pads: "A lot of good work today. I would say the offense kind of got the better of the defense today. But yesterday, the defense probably got the better of the offense; it's good when you have some back and forth. Certainly a lot to clean up. Gotta continue to work to be a tough team. We see flashes of it; we have to be consistently tough."
On the addition of Williams for practice: "Micah wanted to play football, and we wanted to give him a chance to see if he can. It's been a long time; he hasn't really played since his freshman year in high school. But you can't coach fast, right? He's fast. We'll see what he's able to do out there for us."
On input from UO track coach Jerry Schumacher: "Jerry and I talked before and said, yeah, this is something he wants to do. And this is something we want to let him do. It's our job to see if it's going to be a fit for him, because he's obviously got a long career ahead of him in track. That doesn't change. And that's certainly his first priority. But right now, gives him an opportunity to see what he can do."
