Avrit Leads Ducks In Round One
09/08/23 | Men's Golf
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – Oregon men's golf began its 2023-24 campaign as the Mirabel Maui Jim Intercollegiate opened Friday morning at the Mirabel Golf Club. The Ducks finished the first round at 10-under (274) with Owen Avrit leading the way behind a 4-under (67) performance.
How It Happened
No. 22 Oregon got off to a hot start by firing 11-under through the first eight holes, but a pair of double-bogeys and a bogey on hole nine slowed the Ducks' progress up the leaderboard. Oregon shot a collective 2-under on the back nine - with three Ducks going bogey-free over the final nine holes – finishing the round fifth in the standings.
Avrit sits tied for 13th on the leaderboard after carding his 67. The fifth-year senior fired four birdies on the front nine while logging just one bogey in the round.
Three Ducks ended the day with a 2-under 69 on the scorecard to tie for 26th, led by sophomore Aiden Krafft who was bogey-free on the day. Nate Stember finished strong by firing back-to-back birdies on 17 and 18, while Greyson Leach sank an eagle on hole two to aid his own 2-under effort. After two bogeys in the first three holes, Greg Solhaug settled in to shoot even par across the final 15 holes, finishing the day with a 2-over 73.
In the Maui Jim Individual tournament, the Ducks were led by Thomas Jenkins, Jr. who shot a 3-under 69 to finish the day tied for third, just three-strokes off the lead. Jay Gould-Healy fired three birdies on the front nine to help his even-par effort that sat him tied for 16th.
