Camden Lewis wrapped up his career as Oregon's all-time leading scorer, and Ross James provided improvement at punter.
Reviewing Oregon's 2023 season and looking ahead to spring drills.
2023 ROSTER
PK: Camden Lewis, Sr.; Grant Meadors, Fr.; Andrew Boyle, Jr.
P: Ross James, So.; Luke Dunne, Fr.
LS: Luke Basso, So.; Nick Duzansky, Fr.; Colson Brunner, Jr.
KOR: Gary Bryant Jr., Jr.; Bucky Irving, Jr.
PR: Tez Johnson, Jr.; Gary Bryant Jr., Jr.
Starters: The 2023 season was the last in the UO career of placekicker Camden Lewis, who leaves as Oregon's all-time leading scorer with 409 points. Lewis broke in as the UO kicker in 2019, a season marked by his walk-off game-winning field goal against Washington State. He lost the placekicking job as a sophomore but kept his head down and re-established himself in 2021, before making the game-winning PAT in the 2022 Holiday Bowl. He was clutch again in 2023, with two go-ahead kicks in the fourth quarter in a tough road environment at Texas Tech. Some inconsistency cropped back up later in the year, but not to be overlooked is that Lewis also was tasked with kickoff duties this past season due to an injury to Andrew Boyle; Lewis kicked off 101 times in 2023, a big workload on top of going 12-of-18 on field-goal attempts and extending his FBS-leading streak of made PATs to 163 in the Fiesta Bowl.
The Ducks got a big boost in 2023 at punter, where Ross James claimed the job and averaged a school-record 48.4 yards per attempt, with 10 traveling 50 yards or more. That average would have ranked second in the FBS if James had enough attempts to qualify. Luke Basso handled the bulk of the long snapping this past season, while the returners were primarily Tez Johnson on punts (9.5 yards per return) and Gary Bryant Jr. on kickoffs (18.5 yards per return).
Reserves: Luke Dunne made his collegiate debut and punted three times, with a long boot of 45 yards. Grant Meaders handled eight kickoffs for Lewis, and also converted five PATs. Similarly, the Ducks were able to get some game reps for backup long snappers Nick Duzansky and Colson Brunner, as well.
2024 SPRING PREVIEW
Veterans: Ross James, Jr.; Luke Dunne, RFr.; Luke Basso, Jr.; Nick Duzansky, So.; Grant Meadors, So.; Andrew Boyle, Sr.
Newcomers: Atticus Sappington, Jr.
What to Watch: It will be a new era at placekicker for the Ducks, and there's a new face in the mix to replace Lewis, in transfer Atticus Sappington. The other primary special teams roles could enjoy some consistency, although guys like Dunne and Meadors will look to make a push now that they have some experience under their belts.
