Late Comeback Helps UO Men Avoid Upset
11/12/24 | Men's Basketball
Oregon didn't play well most of the night Tuesday, but the Ducks finished strong to beat Portland in overtime.
EUGENE, Ore. — The Ducks will need to take some lessons from Tuesday night, though not nearly as painful a lesson as it might have been.
Trailing by six with less than two minutes to play, the Oregon men's basketball team rallied to force overtime and then beat Portland in the extra period to win 80-70 at Matthew Knight Arena. The UO men were behind by as many as 13 in the second half, but Keeshawn Barthelemy sparked a comeback with a trio of late three-pointers and Jadrian Tracey tied it at 67-67 with 9 seconds left.
The Ducks (3-0) were down 60-49 with 4:49 left, then scored eight straight including a pair of threes by Barthelemy — Oregon's first made threes of the second half. Another three from Barthelemy made it 67-65 with 33 seconds left, and the Pilots (1-2) missed two free throws before Tracy tied it up to force overtime.
"Those first 36 minutes were probably the worst 36 minutes we played all season, including myself," Barthelemy said. "Defensively we just didn't impose our will; gave up a lot of easy baskets, we messed up a lot of switches. We were just too cool to care at that point, and it was probably really obvious to the naked eye.
"But those last nine minutes we picked it up, and we squeezed by."

Tracey finished with a game-high 19 points for the Ducks, while Barthelemy, Nate Bittle and Jackson Shelstad added 13 each. Shelstad also grabbed 10 rebounds to set a career high.
"We're lucky, we're very fortunate," UO coach Dana Altman said. "… Believe me I'm so happy we won the game, because I would be unbelievably miserable. Now I'm just miserable."
How It Happened: The Ducks trailed at halftime, 31-23, but looked to have turned the corner early in the second. Tracey scored twice during a 10-4 run to open the half, as Oregon closed within 35-33.
But Portland made three-pointers on three of its next four possessions, one of them the first of two that the Pilots banked in from the top of the key during the second half. Momentum was back on their side, and they eventually led 54-41 with 8:11 to play.

It was 60-49 when Tracey scored and then Barthelemy made his back-to-back threes. The Ducks had been 0-of-8 from three in the second half until that point.
"I've got up a shooter's mentality, so I kept shooting," said Barthelemy, who had one made field goal in the first two games of the season. "And the difference was, my teammates were looking for me tonight; not saying that they weren't the other nights, but they were really putting emphasis on it tonight. So I appreciate them for that."
Portland led 65-59 with 1:52 to play, but the Pilots didn't hit another field goal until there were 35.7 seconds left in overtime. Barthelemy hit another three to make it 67-65, the Ducks missed their first chance at a tying bucket on the next possession but Barthelemy won the loose ball and Tracey ended up with it before making the tying bucket.
"Bam played phenomenal tonight," Barthelemy said, using Tracey's nickname. "He played his butt off, and there was no one more deserving of making that bucket."

Oregon opened overtime on an 11-0 run, including five points from Tracey. The Pilots finally scored with 35.7 to go, an and-one to make it 78-70, but Shelstad hit two free throws as the Ducks won by double digits.
That outcome seemed improbable most of the night. After Portland hit a three to go up 16-14 in the first half, Bamba made a three at the other end for the Ducks — whose 17-16 lead was their last until overtime.
"All the hustle plays, they were making," Altman said. "Really disappointed in our team, our preparation — that's on me. … We came out lethargic and gave them a lot of confidence giving them easy baskets."
