Defensive Pressure Nets Win For UO Men
12/21/24 | Men's Basketball
Oregon held Stanford close to 30 percent shooting most of the night to win a nonconference matchup Saturday.
SAN JOSE, Calif. — Oregon played smothering defense most of the evening Saturday as the No. 10 Ducks cruised past former conference rival Stanford, 76-61, in the San Jose Tip-Off at SAP Center.
The UO men (11-1) led by as much as 26 and were holding the Cardinal to just over 30 percent shooting before Stanford made 6-of-7 to close the game and improve on those numbers.
"For a long time we defended pretty well," UO coach Dana Altman said. "… They're really a rhythm offensive team. We were hoping our press would take that rhythm away; I thought for the most part it did a decent job in that."
Kwame Evans Jr. returned from an injury scare in Oregon's previous game to lead the Ducks with 13 points Saturday, and Jackson Shelstad added 10. Eight different Ducks scored at least seven points, as the UO men overcame 6-of-22 three-point shooting to win comfortably.

"I liked the balance; I wish we'd hit a few more of the open threes we had," Altman said. "I thought the ball movement a lot of the time was pretty good. Liked the fact we only had nine turnovers."
How It Happened: After scoring the game's first four points, the Ducks trailed 11-9 with 12:20 left in the first half. That Stanford lead dissolved quickly, as Jadrian Tracey scored in transition to spark an 8-0 run by Oregon that also included two buckets by Nate Bittle.
The Ducks then closed the first half on a 16-5 run, allowing only two field goals in the final 8:53 before halftime. Oregon's Brandon Angel, a transfer from Stanford, scored five points to spark the run, which also including two baskets from Ra'Heim Moss and a three-pointer by TJ Bamba.

After Stanford scored first after halftime, the Ducks put together a 7-0 run to lead 43-22. A pair of dunks by Supreme Cook made it 56-32 midway through the half, and a 6-0 run sparked by an Evans three-pointer gave the Ducks their biggest lead at 64-38.
The lead got up to 26 again with 6:54 left on a layin by Shelstad. It was 74-51 with 3:40 left when Stanford scored 10 straight to narrow the gap at the final buzzer.
Up Next: The Ducks close out nonconference play by hosting Weber State on Dec. 29 (B1G+, 2 p.m.).
