Oregon opened spring practice with a workout Thursday on the Ducks' outdoor practice fields.
Spring practice began for the Oregon football team on Thursday, with a practice in the morning on the team's outdoor practice fields. The Ducks will be back in action on Saturday morning, before a two-week break for finals week and spring break.
Head coach Dan Lanning met with the media following Thursday's practice to discuss the start of the spring, newcomers to the roster, changes to the coaching staff and more. Below are some highlights as well as video of his full interview session.
On starting spring practice: "Good day one. There's always great energy the first day of practice, but there's a lot to clean up. We want to go attack technique. It's good to see some young guys out there picking it up."
On having two practices and then a two-week break: "I don't know if there's a huge benefit because there's gonna be a period of time that puts us behind, but there's gonna be some guys that are able to join us post that first term that will give us a chance to get those guys involved. Certainly it lengthens that spring window so you get a little bit of time in between to study what you've done well and what you can improve on."
On having nearly 30 newcomers out there for the first time: "I thought there was good and there was bad. The biggest thing, you saw energy and you saw guys moving from drill to drill with a purpose. There were mistakes made, which there's gonna be, it's about fixing those."
On what he hopes improves between Thursday and Saturday: "I hope effort and technique. And then are you making the same mistakes you made day one - we've got to eliminate those as we go forward. It's just about constant improvement, constant growth. You can't eat an elephant in one bite; it takes one day at a time, a little bit better each day."
On Noah Whittington returning to the practice field: "We're being conscientious of where he's at. They're doing a really good job in the treatment program. He's way ahead of schedule. He's done a really good job there, but we'll be conscientious of that through spring."
