03/24/24 | Women's Tennis
EUGENE, Ore. – Trailing 3-0 to 41st-ranked Arizona, the No. 61 Oregon women's tennis team battled within a point of the Wildcats with two singles victories, but ultimately fell 4-2 on Sunday at the Student Tennis Center.
Â
Freshman Candela Aparisi earned the Ducks' first team point of the day with her 7-5, 6-3 win over Teja Tirunelveli on court six, putting the score at 3-1 in favor of Arizona. The remaining three singles matches then each went on to a decisive third set.
Â
Jo-Yee Chan's 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 win at No. 3 trimmed UO's deficit to one at 3-2 with Sophie Luescher and Uxia Martinez Moral still battling in a third set in their respective matches.
Â
Luescher earned a split after dropping the opening set to 98th-ranked Reece Carter, but Carter pulled out the deciding victory 6-4, 4-6, 6-2. Martinez Moral trailed 4-2 in the third set after she bounced back from a 6-3 first-set loss to win the second, 7-5.
Â
The Ducks (9-7, 0-4) fell behind after the Wildcats (12-9, 1-4) took a tightly contested doubles point. The Cats' top duo of Carter and Brandelyn Fulgenzi earned a 6-2 win on court one over Martinez Moral and Tilde Jagare. The point was clinched when Belen Bevenhoven and Martyna Ostzygalo outlasted Chan and Luescher at second doubles, 7-5.
Â
It marked the second straight match, and just the sixth time this season, that Oregon has dropped the doubles point.
Â
Aparisi collected her third consecutive singles victory and second straight Pac-12 win. For Chan, she earned her team-leading 11th singles win of the spring and third in conference action, and has won seven of her last nine matches overall.
Â
Six of Oregon's seven losses this season have come against teams currently ranked in the ITA's top-75 poll.
Â
The Ducks finish their home slate next weekend as the Washington schools visit the Student Tennis Center. UO will take on Washington on Friday (1:30 p.m.) and will hold Senior Day on Sunday against Washington State at 11 a.m.
