Solhaug Paces Ducks in Round One
03/28/24 | Men's Golf
SAN FRANCISCO – Greg Solhaug shot a 1-over 71 to lead the No. 24 Oregon men's golf team in round one of The Goodwin at TPC Harding Park on Thursday.
Â
Solhaug closed the day tied for 28th, while the Ducks (290, +10) finished the opening round in the middle of the pack, tied for 15th in a field featuring 31 programs. Oregon had three golfers shoot 73 on the day in Owen Avrit, Aiden Krafft and Nate Stember, while Greyson Leach shot a 75 to round out the lineup for the Ducks.
Â
"We didn't play particularly well," head coach Casey Martin said. "This golf course is really difficult and I'm sure that played a big role in our challenges. We just didn't have a lot going. Tomorrow's forecast is brutal, it will be a war."
Â
How It Happened
Solhaug used a birdie on hole seven to shoot even par across his first nine holes of the day, and after carding a four on par-five hole 10 he found himself at 1-under. Trouble sprang up on hole 12 as Solhaug recorded back-to-back bogeys, but five-straight pars to close the round helped put him just outside the top 25.
Â
Stember played a steady round, logging 15 pars on the day. Three bogeys and no birdies slowed his progress, and at the conclusion of the round Stember was tied for 68th at 3 over. After shooting 3 over through his first eight holes, Avrit rebounded by firing three-straight birdies to pull back to even entering hole 12. Back-to-back bogeys on holes 13 and 14, plus another bogey on the final hole of the day, brought him back to 3 over to match Stember in the first round. Also finishing the day 3 over was Krafft, who shot two birdies on the front nine before a double bogey on hole 14 saw his score rise.
Â
Hugh Adams, who is playing the tournament as an individual for Oregon, was bogey-free through his first eight holes of the day before a double bogey on hole nine set him back. Birdies on holes 10 and 17 helped his cause, but Adams finished the day 4 over in a tie for 92nd. Finishing one stroke behind Adams was Leach, who made 14 pars on the day but could not break through for a birdie.
Â
The Ducks shot 10 over as a collective, which put them in a tie for 15th with Oregon State after the first round.
