Ducks Get Elusive Pac-12 Sweep on Senior Day
05/18/24 | Baseball
Oregon ends the season on a five-game winning streak and will enter the Pac-12 Conference Tournament in Scottsdale, Ariz., as either the No. 2 seed or the No. 3 seed.
If Oregon State beats Arizona on Saturday night in Tucson, the Ducks will be the two-seed and play eighth-seeded Stanford on Wednesday at 10 a.m. and fifth-seeded Arizona State on Thursday at 10 a.m.
If Arizona beats Oregon State tonight, the Ducks will be the three seed and play seventh-seed Utah on Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. and fourth-seeded USC on Thursday at 2:30 p.m.
How It Happened: Oregon took the early lead with a two-run home run in the third. After Drew Smith walked, Neville hit his third home run of the series to give the Ducks a 2-0 lead.
WSU (21-32, 9-21 Pac-12) came right back scoring three runs in the top fourth, but the Ducks matched the Cougars with three of their own in the bottom half. Bennett Thompson started the rally with a base hit before scoring on a Molony home run to give Oregon the lead back. Later in the inning, Neville made it a two-run game with a bases loaded sacrifice fly.
The Ducks tacked on a pair of runs in the fifth inning. Molony reached with his third hit of the day and moved to second when Justin Cassella was hit by a pitch. Carter Garate plated both Molony and Cassella with a double into the left-field corner.
After the Cougars got one back in the top of the sixth, Neville responded with his second homer of the day and the fourth off the series, this one a laser over the center-field wall, in Oregon's half of the sixth.
The Ducks tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the eighth. Smith led off the inning with a double and scored on a RBI single by pinch hitter Dominic Hellman. Jack Brooks then pinch ran for Hellman and came around to score on a Justin Cassella bases-loaded walk.
Box Score Notes: Oregon honored eight seniors before the game (Boettcher, Cassella, Freund, Gordon, Mercado, Moore, Mullan, Seitter) … The announced attendance of 3,518 was the 24th largest crowd in PK Park history and the third most this season … Seitter (7-4) picked up the win allowing four runs on six hits in 5.1 innings of work with four strikeouts … Ryan Featherston and Bradley Mullan combined to toss 3.2 scoreless innings out of the bullpen.
On Deck: Oregon travels to Scottsdale, Ariz., for the Pac-12 Conference Tournament. The Ducks open tournament play on Wednesday.
Quotes:
Head Coach Mark Wasikowski
On series sweep…
"Coach Lopez always used to talk about when you're playing your best baseball at the end of the year, that's a sign of a good club. It's awesome to see the commitment of these guys. Excited that we were able to sweep, we'll see where the chips fall on what's coming in front of us. What we know is next is the tournament, and we can't wait to go. We're going to win that tournament, we're not a participant."
On Mason Neville's performance…
"He's probably just been more consistent as a person. On and off the field, he's been doing a good job of being boring. A boring plan for him means that he's working his tail off and he's doing a good job in school and on the field and in the weight room and all that. I think his success is probably a result of him being boring in all aspects which means he's accomplishing what he wants in each aspect which is good."
On Bradley Mullen…
"Bradley has done a tremendous job. He showed up, he's been a great kid from day one. When he first came in, he wasn't making contract demands when he first got recruited. He was excited about the success we had last year and saw the environment that was created at PK Park and said, 'Coach, I want to be a part of that.' He didn't say that he needed a certain role, he just showed up and said I'll earn what I get. He's very humble and we really appreciate Brad."
On approach to Pac-12 tournament…
"Tomorrow is an off day, the next day is back on. We get a chance to practice and get better and improve and prepare to win the tournament."
Kevin Seitter
On Senior Day at Oregon…
"I'm just super grateful for this opportunity. It's a phenomenal environment, it's a phenomenal program, it's a phenomenal school. So, it means the world to me, it's a really special day for my family, like I mentioned before. I'm just so grateful for everybody here."
On Overall performance…
"I thought it was good. Obviously, I would have liked to see myself go a little bit further in the game, but you know, that's baseball, and the guys have my back. I thought today was a tremendous team effort that carried over from the past two days. I think we're rolling, and it's a great opportunity for us to keep the momentum and go into the Pac-12 Tournament hungry and ready to roll."
Bradley Mullan
On Overall performance…
"Zeroes are zeroes. Not the cleanest, but got it done; that's all that matters. Sweet to sweep, so go from there."
On season performance as a whole…
"It's gone well. I mean, there's been some outings where it's like, what's going on, and that's just part of baseball. It's all about adjustments and having a response to it, and I think I've done a relatively good job, that's just credit to my teammates and coaches for putting me out there because I'm not here without them."
Carter Garate
On heating up offensively…
"Kind of feeling like I'm getting back to where I was at the beginning of the season. The ups and downs of the season are not easy to deal with. It comes down to just fighting through and turning back to your preparation. And I mean, that's kind of where you go back to, so I feel like I'm getting back to where I was."
On personal pride in defensive ability…
"Yeah, I think that's one of the most important things I can bring to the team. And I take a lot of pride in defense, so do the rest of our guys and I think we've done a good job just as a whole unit. Coaches have prepared us to come in and do our best. So, our focus is just to lock down that defense and help out the pitcher as much as possible."
