Late Surge Lifts UO Men Over Huskies
01/21/25 | Men's Basketball
Oregon outscored UW 20-9 over the final 5:36 to win Tuesday at Matthew Knight Arena.
EUGENE, Ore. — Since the calendar flipped to 2025, Oregon's in-state natives have led the way for the UO men's basketball team. On Tuesday, a flock of other Ducks joined them in formation.
TJ Bamba scored a team-high 21 points, Brandon Angel added 15 and Supreme Cook contributed 13 as No. 15 Oregon pulled away to beat Washington on Tuesday at Matthew Knight Arena, 82-71. The team's two leading scorers on the year, Jackson Shelstad and Nate Bittle, combined for 18, continuing to make their presence felt on a night teammates carried a bigger load.
"We've been saying all year one of our biggest strengths is our depth," Angel said. "Any given night we have five, six, seven — the whole team — we know can score double digits. You trust your teammates to step up and fill that void."

Oregon improved to 16-3 overall and 5-3 in Big Ten play, shooting 50.8 percent as a team, winning the battle of the boards 37-24 and committing just two second-half turnovers after going into halftime with eight.
"Like coach always says, it's a 40-minute fight," Angel said. "So, we knew there was a lot of game left. We knew we would be in the game."
How It Happened: Oregon fought back from an early eight-point deficit to lead by two at halftime, and went up as much as five early in the second half. But Washington turned it into a back-and-forth game and led 58-55 with 8:26 to play.
Bamba answered with a three-pointer to tie it up, and Angel put Oregon back in front for good. The Huskies managed to tie it up twice the rest of the way, but the Ducks never trailed again after Bamba's three, his third of the night — after going 0-of-10 the previous four games.
"I've been in the gym," Bamba said. "I'm a confident person, I knew who I am, and I just had to get back to that."
Bamba hit two free throws to give Oregon the lead for good, 64-62. That capped a 6-0 run capped by two points from Cook, whose physicality made a difference in the second half. UW scored four straight to get within 73-68 with 1:37, but the Ducks answered with nine straight to put the game away.

It was a different story at the start. Shelstad scored to open the game, but Washington answered with 10 straight and led nearly the rest of the first half. A three by Angel sparked a 6-0 run to get the Ducks back within 20-19, and another three by Keeshawn Barthelemy put Oregon back in front at 26-25.
Two more late buckets by Barthelemy got the lead to 32-29 before UW tied it with three free throws. But Bamba scored to close the first half with the Ducks up, 34-32.
Up Next: The Ducks play at Minnesota on Saturday (1 p.m., BTN).
