Ducks Start Fast at ITA Northwest Regionals

BERKELEY, Calif. – The Oregon women's tennis saw all three of its doubles pairs advance to the round of 32, while four Ducks moved on to the singles main draw on the first day of the ITA Northwest Regionals held at Hellman Tennis Complex and Timothy Korth Tennis Complex.

The day began with three Oregon doubles teams advancing out of the first round in the day's first session, followed later by Virginia Crocker, Hinata Furutani, Bridget Mihulka and Juliet Santitto each moving on to the round of 16 in the singles qualifying draw.

The duo of Patsy Daughters and Mihulka along with Hadley Appling and Avery Jennings each bested their opponents from Eastern Washington by identical 8-3 scores, while Tilde Jagare and Santitto got by Pacific's Milena Mayorova and Rayne Sugai, 8-5.

In singles, Furutani battled to a three-set victory over Sacramento State's Camila Maldonado Gutierrez, 6-2, 6-7 (8), 7-5, and Virginia Crocker moved through in straight sets over Pauline Lerminiaux of Pacific, 6-2, 6-4, in the opening round.

Following her three-set victory, Furutani eased by Aileena Hu from UC Davis, 6-2, 6-1, to earn her spot in the main draw. Crocker was victorious against Gonzaga's Ella Neilson in three sets, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, to move on in the bracket.

Santitto moved through to the second round of the qualifying draw due to a withdrawal from her opponent from EWU. The sophomore outlasted Gonzaga's Maddy MacNeille in the round of 32 in three sets, 6-2, 4-6, 6-1.

Mihulka, who had a first-round bye in the qualifying draw, moved into the main draw with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over UC Davis' Sophia Sappa.

All four Oregon doubles teams will compete in the round of 32 on Saturday beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday will also bring the start of the singles main draw, where Daughters, Jagare and Symons will begin their singles action. Daughters and Symons will get underway at 11:30 a.m. with Jagare starting at 2:30 p.m.
