
Ducks Wrap Up First Day of Gonzaga Invite

SPOKANE, Wash. – The Oregon women's tennis team concluded the first day of the three-day Gonzaga Invitational Friday at Stevens Center, picking up three doubles wins to go with four singles victories.

With six Ducks competing in the event, Oregon won four of six singles matches while going 3-2 in the doubles brackets.

In the Gold Bracket, the team of Hinata Furutani and Olivia Symons went 2-0 to begin their tournament. The duo first advanced by Kasumi Hirayama and Nene Uemura from Portland State, 7-5, and later took down Gonzaga's Karla Brown and Elizabeth Tindera, 6-4. The pair of Furutani and Symons improved to 5-1 when paired together this fall.
The tandem of Avery Jennings and Juliet Santitto won their opening match of the day, defeating Idaho's Marta Giglio and Soha Singh, 6-2. Oregon's sophomore duo fell in their second match of the day, 6-3, to Seattle's Daria Nazarenko and Lola Tavcar.
Furutani maintained her momentum into singles play, as she defeated Terezie Stverakova of Montana State in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2, in the Blue Bracket. The freshman is 5-2 in singles during her initial fall campaign.
Jennings pulled out a straight-set victory against Portland's Meagan Pearson, 6-3, 6-3, to advance in the Gold Bracket to even her fall singles record to 2-2. Also in the Gold Bracket, Santitto eased by Idaho's Soha Singh, 6-1, 6-1.
Bridget Mihulka needed three sets to oust Utah State's Magdalena Nunez Pureco 6-2, 1-6, 10-2, to move on in the Blue Bracket. Mihulka improves to 4-2 in singles play this fall.
