EUGENE, Ore. – After posting an undefeated weekend in her collegiate debut, freshman Hadley Appling was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week on Wednesday, the conference office announced.
Appling, a native of Louisville, Ky., tallied three straight-set singles victories while going 3-0 with three different doubles partners over the three-day Duck Invitational last weekend at the Student Tennis Center.
Facing a field of athletes from Portland, Utah, Washington and Washington State, Appling picked up straight-set wins over two players from Portland along with a 6-4, 7-5 victory over Ashley Kerker of Utah.
Appling and partner Avery Jennings started the weekend on Friday off with a 6-0 win over UP before she and fellow freshman Virginia Crocker recorded a 6-3 win over a second Pilot pair later that day. Appling and Bridget Mihulka finished off Utah's Hailey Kerker and Kaila Barksdale, 6-2.
The award is the second weekly award for the Ducks since joining the Big Ten, as she joins Patsy Daughters who took home Big Ten Freshman of the Week last spring.
The Duck Invitational marked the first fall event for Oregon, who continues its fall season Friday at the ITA Regionals in Berkley, Calif.
