Ducks Win Thriller for First Big Ten Win
03/28/25 | Women's Tennis
EUGENE, Ore. – The Oregon women's tennis team picked up its first Big Ten win and snapped a six-match skid Friday, as the Ducks defeated Indiana 4-3 at the UO Student Tennis Center.
After a back-and-forth match and Oregon needing one point to secure victory, two singles matches remained and both were in a third and final set. When all was said and done, the match hinged on a third-set tiebreaker on court six.
Juliet Santitto dropped the opening set at No. 6, 6-3, but rebounded with a 6-4 win in the second. With the match tied at 6-6 in the third, Santitto and Elisabeth Dunac went into a tiebreaker. The tiebreak was tied at 6-6 and again at 7-7 before Santitto won the final two points to give her team its first conference win.
Oregon (8-8, 1-6) began the day by grabbing the doubles point before the lead changed hands multiple times during singles play.
Â
After splitting on courts one and two, the doubles point came down to No. 3 doubles. UO's tandem of Candela Aparisi and Marjorie Souza were tied 3-3 with IU's Dunac and Sarah L'Alier, before going on to claim a 6-4 victory.
Bridget Mihulka and Karin Young won their match at No. 2, 6-1, to pick up their second Big Ten win and improve their spring mark to 4-2. For Aparisi and Souza, the win marked their fourth of the spring and second in league play.
Â
Indiana (7-9, 1-5) claimed the first two singles matches to take a 2-1 lead, but Jagare won in straight sets to even the match at 2-2 before Patsy Daughters pulled out a comeback victory in three sets to put the Ducks in front 3-2.
Through 15 spring matches, Oregon's doubles teams are a combined 21-20 to go with a 36-36 singles mark. Oregon wraps up the weekend by hosting No. 63 Purdue on Sunday at the Student Tennis Center (11 a.m.).
