Ducks Drop Heartbreaker to Purdue
03/30/25 | Women's Tennis
EUGENE, Ore. – For the second straight match, Oregon's match was decided by a third-set tiebreaker in the day's final singles match. On Sunday, however, the ball didn't bounce in the Ducks' favor in a 4-3 loss to No. 63 Purdue at the UO Student Tennis Center.
Oregon (8-9, 1-7) took a 1-0 lead into singles with doubles victories at Nos. 1 and 3. The Boilermakers (10-4, 4-3) responded by winning the first three singles matches to jump in front 3-1, needing just one more team point to secure victory.
The Ducks needed to win the final three singles matches to pull off the comeback. Patsy Daughters did her part with a 6-4, 6-2 win on court four, bringing UO within a point at 3-2. On court six, Juliet Santitto overcame a 7-5 loss in the first set to win the next two 6-3, 6-4 to tie the match at 3-3.
The day's final point would come down to a three-set thriller at No. 2. Karin Young claimed the first set 6-4 before her opponent Ida Clement leveled the match with a 6-2 win in the second set. Tied at 6-6 in the third, the match went to a tiebreaker. And for the second straight match, the tiebreak went to extra points with Clement squeaking out an 8-6 victory.
The Ducks' No. 1 doubles team of Tilde Jagare and Santitto earned a 6-3 win before Candela Aparisi and Marjorie Souza picked up a 6-4 win to claim the doubles point for the second straight match and third time in the last four outings.
Seven of Oregon's nine losses have come to ranked opponents, including six of seven conference losses. The Ducks travel north to take on rival Washington on Saturday (12 p.m.).
