Two Grand Slams Give Ducks Run-Rule Win
04/14/25 | Baseball
TYSONS, Va. — Mason Neville and Carter Garate each blasted a grand slam and Ian Umlandt went all seven innings on the mound as No. 16 Oregon beat Georgetown, 12-1, at Capital One Park on Monday.
The Ducks tallied seven hits on the day but were seeing the ball well, drawing 11 walks and reaching on a pair of hit by pitches. Five of the Ducks' seven hits went for extra bases.
Neville went 2-for-3 at the player with a double, a grand slam, two walks and four RBI as the leadoff man, while Garate went 2-for-3 with five RBI and three runs in the nine-hole spot.
Umlandt put together a dominant outing on the mound, allowing one run on four hits while striking out six against just two walks. 61 of his 97 pitches went for strikes as he earned his fourth win of the season.
How it Happened: After Jacob Walsh was hit by a pitch and Maddox Molony drew a walk to start the fourth inning, Burke-Lee Mabeus drove a 3-1 pitch into the left-center gap for a double. Walsh crossed home plate to put the first run of the game on the board but Moloney was thrown out trying to score from first.
With two away, Jeffery Heard and Ryan Cooney drew back-to-back full count walks to load the bases. Garate wore a 2-2 pitch to send home a run and bring Neville up to the plate, and he hammered the first pitch he saw deep over the right field wall to make it a 6-0 ballgame.
The shot was Neville's 17th of the season and the first grand slam of his career.
Georgetown got one run back with a solo home run with one away in the bottom of the frame, but Umlandt retired the next two batters to avoid a crooked number. The solo home run was the lone extra-base hit Umlandt allowed on the day.
The Ducks got that run back in the top of the sixth. Garate reached on a bunt single, pushing it past the glove of the pitcher towards the second baseman, and stole second. With two down, Dominic Hellman slapped a double into the right-center gap to drive in UO's seventh run of the game.
Oregon wasn't done, adding five runs in the seventh to put the run rule into effect. Anson Aroz, Mabeus and Parker Stinson walked to load the bases, and Ryan Cooney brought Aroz home on an infield single. With a 2-2 count, Garate sent a belt-high fastball over the fence in right center for hist first home run of the season to put the Ducks up 12-1.
Umlandt gave up two singles in the bottom of the seventh, but he painted the corner with his 97th pitch of the day for his sixth strikeout to end the ballgame.
Box Score Notes: Neville's grand slam was the seventh hit by the Ducks this season and Garate's was the eighth … Second game this season with two grand slams in a game … Neville's home run was the 33rd of his Duck career – the second-most in program history – while Garate's was his sixth … Umlandt struck out five-plus batters for the third time this season … All nine of the Ducks' starters reached base safely … Oregon left six runners on base.
