Late Breakdowns Cost Ducks at Portland
04/02/25 | Baseball
Oregon had the lead through six innings but saw Portland win in walk-off fashion Wednesday night.
The No. 15 UO baseball team (20-8) followed Saturday's doubleheader sweep by Ohio State on the road with a 7-6 loss to the Pilots. Oregon returns home to host Michigan this weekend.
The Ducks took a 6-5 lead in the sixth inning Wednesday on a two-run homer by Anson Aroz. But the Pilots tied it in the seventh and won in the ninth on a bases-loaded hit by pitch.
"We made mistakes at the end to lose the ball game," UO coach Mark Wasikowski said. "It's not because of lack of effort; it's a lack of execution."
Oregon hadn't lost consecutive games this season until the current streak.
"I think they're probably going to be looking forward to getting to the practice field tomorrow," Wasikowski said. "I don't think they're handling it great right now mentally; you lost a doubleheader, so basically they had two bad days. …
"We're putting the right guys out there in spots and they're succeeding for the most part; in the last couple of days, they haven't. So we've got to be patient with them. It's a development thing, too. But, yeah, I think they're hurting. I think the guys are hurting."
How It Happened: The Ducks got out to an early lead when UO career home run leader Jacob Walsh hit his sixth of this season, scoring Maddox Molony. The Pilots answered with a run in the bottom of the first, and tied it in the third.
Oregon took advantage of a Portland breakdown in the fifth, after Parker Stinson walked with one out and Carter Garate advanced him with a two-out walk. Mason Neville then put the ball in play and an error allowed both runners to score for a 4-2 Oregon lead.
Two singles, two walks, two hit batters and two wild pitches allowed Portland to retake the lead with three runs in the bottom of the fifth. Santiago Garcia came on with two out and the bases loaded and ended the inning with a three-pitch strikeout.
Chase Meggers singled with one out in the sixth and Aroz followed with his ninth homer of the season for a 6-5 lead. Garcia pitched a 1-2-3 bottom of the sixth, before allowing a game-tying homer in the seventh.
Cole Stokes (1-2) pitched around a one-out triple in the eighth for the Ducks. But after getting two quick outs in the ninth, the next four batters reached — three were hit by pitches — to force across the winning run.
Notable: Aroz homered in his fourth consecutive game. … Walsh has reached base in 22 straight games. … UO starting pitcher Ian Umlandt's counterpart for the Pilots was his brother, Nolan Umlandt.
Up Next: The Ducks open a three-game series against Michigan at PK Park on Friday (5 p.m., B1G+).
