01/02/26 | Men's Basketball
COLLEGE PARK, Md.— Nate Bittle scored 16 points and anchored a dominant defensive effort as Oregon held Maryland to 27.7 percent shooting and pulled away for a 64–54 victory Friday night at XFINITY Center.
The Ducks (8–6, 1–2 Big Ten) controlled the game from the opening minutes, building an early lead and never trailing after the first few possessions. Oregon led 34–27 at halftime and maintained steady separation throughout the second half, extending the margin to as many as 13 points in the final minute. Jamari Phillips hit consecutive threes midway through the second half to give the Ducks a much-needed spark. The Ducks stayed in control from that point on.
Bittle finished 6 of 10 from the field, added seven rebounds and five blocks, helping Oregon limit Maryland to just 11 points in the paint. Takai Simpkins matched Bittle with 16 points, going 5 of 10 from the floor and 5 of 6 at the free-throw line, while also grabbing seven rebounds. Kwame Evans Jr. contributed 12 points and eight rebounds, and Wei Lin chipped in eight points for the Ducks.
How It Happened: Oregon shot 48.9 percent overall (23 of 47) and leaned on interior efficiency, scoring 32 points in the paint. The Ducks also converted key second-chance opportunities and finished with a 40–37 rebounding edge. Oregon led for 36 minutes and committed 12 turnovers, which Maryland turned into just five points.
The Ducks opened the game on a 9–2 run and weathered an early Maryland push before regaining control behind efficient offense and rim protection. Oregon shot 50 percent in the first half and held the Terrapins to 27.3 percent shooting before the break. Bittle and Evans combined to score 17 first-half points as Oregon carried a seven-point advantage into halftime.
Maryland (7–7, 0–3) pulled within three points on several occasions in the second half but could not sustain momentum. Oregon answered each challenge with timely baskets, including back-to-back 3-pointers from Jamari Phillips midway through the half that stretched the lead to six. Simpkins later capped a fast break with a dunk in the final minute as Oregon sealed the win at the free-throw line.
Solomon Washington led Maryland with 17 points and 12 rebounds, but the Terrapins struggled from the perimeter, shooting just 7 of 35 from three-point range. Maryland finished 18 of 65 from the field and was outscored 30–27 in the second half.
Oregon finished 5 of 16 from beyond the arc and 13 of 21 at the foul line. The Ducks' defense also recorded seven blocks and four steals, continuing a strong interior presence that proved decisive on the road.
Notable: Phillips hit a career-high two three pointers off the bench … Bittle and Simpkins each net a team-high 16 points, while Evans Jr. scored 12 points with eight rebounds … Drew Carter played a career-high 18 minutes … Jackson Shelstad missed the game with a hand injury.
