Rebounding Margin Critical In Loss at UW

The Oregon men play at home twice this week looking to establish momentum.
SEATTLE — The Oregon men's basketball team will return home looking to establish some momentum after the Ducks' losing streak reached six games Sunday.
The UO men (8-12, 1-8 Big Ten) were minus-22 in rebounding and shot 36 percent in a 72-57 loss at Washington on Sunday. The Huskies' 45-23 advantage on the boards included 18 offensive rebounds, compared to one for the Ducks.
"We just couldn't get a rebound," UO coach Dana Altman said. "Their two big guys had more rebounds than our team. We knew it would be a problem coming in; we didn't anticipate it being that big of a problem."
Sean Stewart had 15 points to lead the Ducks, while Kwame Evans Jr. added 11 points with eight rebounds. Wei Lin scored nine and Takai Simpkins had eight for the Ducks, who were 3-of-15 from three-point range — including 1-of-9 at halftime.
"I thought we would compete at a higher level when some shots didn't go in," Altman said. "I thought our guys gave in to it."
The Ducks are back at home this upcoming week, to host UCLA in their "Grateful Ducks" game on Wednesday and then Iowa on Sunday.
How It Happened: Stewart had the game's first field goal, a layup two minutes into the game that tied it 2-2 after two UW free throws. But the Huskies then went on a 12-0 run, and they had the lead the rest of the afternoon.
Jamari Phillips hit Oregon's only three-pointer of the first half to end UW's scoring run, and a three-point play by Evans got the Ducks within seven at 22-15 with 7:02 left in the first half. But UW put together a 10-0 run over the final five minutes and had a 34-19 lead at the break.
The second half was more back-and-forth, with neither team putting together a run longer than 5-0. The Huskies did push the lead to 20 at one point, 56-36, but Oregon made the final margin closer thanks in no small part to a 20-of-23 effort at the free-throw line in the second half.
Notable: The Ducks continue to battle without injured veteran leaders Jackson Shelstad and Nate Bittle. … Freshman Efe Vatan made his UO debut after missing the first half of the season due to injury. … Sophomore Jamari Phillips returned from a two-game suspension.
Up Next: The Ducks host UCLA on Wednesday (8 p.m., Big Ten Network).
