Comeback Bid Falls Just Short

Ducks fall 4-3 to Northwestern on Sunday.
EUGENE, Ore. – Trailing 3-1 to No. 60 Northwestern, the Oregon women's tennis team nearly pulled off an incredible comeback victory, forcing the final three singles matches into a third and decisive set before ultimately falling 4-3 on Sunday at the UO Student Tennis Center.
After claiming the doubles point to begin the day, the Ducks (11-8, 2-5) found themselves down a point after NU claimed the first two singles matches in straight sets.
The next four singles matches all went into a third set, including a 6-2, 0-6, 6-4 win for Tilde Jagare over the nation's 87th-ranked player in Margot Phanthala on court one. The win marked Jagare's second of the season against a top-100 opponent and trimmed Oregon's deficit to 3-2 after the Wildcats picked up their third point at No. 5.
Needing to win the final two singles matches still in progress to win the match, Patsy Daughters overcame a 6-3 opening-set loss to win her next two sets in tiebreakers, 7-6 (2), 7-6 (4), to even the match at three points apiece.
The day's final point would be completed on court six between Bridget Mihulka and NU's Marelie Raath. After splitting the first two sets, which both went into tiebreakers, the final set would be decided the same way, with Raath coming away with a 7-6 (4) victory in the third.
Between Daughters and Mihulka, five of their six sets played went into a tiebreaker while four of six singles matches played to a third set. Four of Oregon's five Big Ten losses have come against ranked teams, while seven of its eight overall losses have come against the nation's top 75.
Despite facing two top-100 doubles teams from the Wildcats, UO managed to pick up wins on courts two and three to claim the 15th doubles point of the spring season. Hinata Furutani and Juliet Santitto upset the No. 81 doubles team, 6-4, on court two for their first ranked win of the season.
As a team, Oregon boasts a 53-32 combined dual singles record to pair while going 32-14 in doubles play. The Ducks fly south to take on UCLA on Friday (12 p.m.) and USC on Saturday (1 p.m.).
