Jordan & Richotte Lead NCAA Qualifying Assault in MPSF Day 1

SEATTLE – The University of Oregon track and field teams scored two wins, three school records and nine NCAA provisional marks (7 women, 2 men) in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) first day action hosted Friday by the University of Washington in the Dempsey Indoor Center.
On the women’s side, redshirt senior Lauryn Jordan posted a 63-point personal best in the pentathlon (third, 3,957) and may have earned her first indoor NCAA invitation in the event and trailed only Jacquelyn Johnson of Arizona State (first, 4,159) and Lauren Collins of UC Irvine (second, 3,963).
Jordan’s score Friday also stood as a 229-point season best, 28-point personal best and improved upon the former school record of 3,929 points by teammate Kalidnra McFadden in 2004.
Simultaneously during the event, the Stockton, Calif., native also upped her current standing on the NCAA provisional list with a two-inch school record (20-6 1/2) – the same winning mark in the separately-contested, open long jump section won by Sarah Matthew of Stanford. Jordan had upped the school record in two other prior meets this season over the preseason mark of 19-11 1/2.
“In the first event (the 60m hurdles), I hit the third hurdle – the same one I hit and fell on here last time I was here,” Jordan said. “I was thinking there was no way I was going down again, and I was going to break it if I had to. Afterwards, I didn’t get as many points in the high jump as I wanted, so I was ready to make it up in the long jump, especially since my warm-ups were great. This was a great field, but I wasn’t worried so much about anyone else, just getting as many points as possible so I could go to nationals.”
Jordan also enjoyed a pentathlon personal best Friday in the shot put (42-11 3/4) and another season best in the 60m hurdles (8.83). Her other pentathlon marks included 5-4 1/4 in the high jump and 2:39.75 in the 800m.
Looking at the provisional qualifying lists for the upcoming NCAA Indoor Championships two weeks away, only five collegians had bettered Jordan’s long jump mark Friday, and only seven had scored higher pentathlon marks, possibly earning her a pair of invitations since the NCAA selection committee has taken at least 15-16 in each event in recent history.
Also in the pentathlon, freshman Erin Funkhouser turned in a 679-point personal in her second ever competition (eighth, 3,215). The Grass Valley, Ore., native posted marks of 9.84 in the 60m hurdles, 5-0 1/2 in the high jump, 30-7 in the shot put, 16-3 in the long jump and 2:23.56 in the 800m.
Sophomore Kalindra McFadden also started the event and posted marks of 9.14 in the 60m hurdles, and season bests of 5-4 1/4 in the high jump and 37-3 1/4 in the shot put, but did not compete in the final two events.
Also in the field events, redshirt senior Britney Henry added her second NCAA provisional weight throw mark of the year (third, 65-2) and trailed only Arizona State’s Sarah Stevens (first, 69-5 1/4) and Jessica Pressley (second, 66-7 1/4).
Henry’s best throw Friday was just shy of her school record and season best (65-6) from her last trip to Seattle two weeks ago – a mark that ranked her 15th nationally among collegians last week.
The Ducks’ pair of NCAA provisional pole vault qualifiers – senior Emily Enders and freshman Eniko Eros – placed fifth and eighth overall with the same marks of 12-11 1/2 and were only a quarter-inch shy of their best NCAA qualifying marks earlier in the season.
On the track, UO’s young women’s distance corps also added their first two NCAA provisional marks of the season.
The women’s distance medley relay of senior Dana Buchanan (1,200m), sophomore Rebekah Noble (800m) and freshmen Keshia Baker (400m) and Nicole Blood (1,600m) ran the second-fastest time in school history (11:18.29), while Washington followed seven seconds back (second, 11:25.67).
UO’s time easily met the NCAA provisional standard (11:30.00), and only eight other teams had run faster in ’07 than the Ducks before Friday.
In comparison, the NCAA has invited between 11-12 teams each of the past 10 years. Last year, the Ducks also qualified provisionally with a school record time of 11:16.05, then ran a near-school record in the NCAA Championships to earn their first All-America honor (seventh, 11:18.89).
Individually in the 5,000m, freshman Keara Sammons notched her first NCAA provisional mark (third, 16:31.71) and jumped to fourth all-time for UO in the event. The Aurora, Colo., native easily dipped under the NCAA provisional standard (16:42.00), and trailed Arianna Lambie of Stanford (first, 15:50.65) and Anita Campbell of Washington (second, 16:28.19).
In the sprints, junior Kavina Hall ran a personal best in the 200m final (eighth, 24.95) and joined the UO all-time list at fourth. Junior Ashley Bridenbeck ran a .08-second personal best in the 60m prelims (12th, 7.93) and moved to fourth all-time for UO, and added a .43-second season best in the 200m (21st, 26.35).
Other Ducks that competed Friday included sophomores Megan Maloney (weight throw, seventh, 53-11 1/4) and Leah Worthen (200m, 19th, 25.78)
On the men’s side, graduate student Brian Richotte also climbed the NCAA provisional weight throw list with his winning mark (68-0 1/4 (20.73m)), and was more than four feet better than runner-up and NCAA outdoor veteran Martin Bingisser of Washington (second, 63-7 3/4).
The first-year Duck posted an eight-inch season best Friday and also scored a school record by bettering the previous mark of 67-7 by former NCAA qualifier Adam Kriz. Richotte’s mark will likely move him into the top-10 nationally since only six throwers had thrown farther in ’07 before this weekend.
“I started off a little tentative because I wanted to get a mark to make sure I got to finals,” Richotte said. “After that, I had a pretty good series and felt more and more comfortable with the four turns.”
On the track, Oregon scored its third NCAA provisional mark of the year in the distance medley (third, 9:37.95), and crossed the finish line after California (first, 9:34.99) and Washington (second, 9:35.89).
The Duck combo of juniors Marcus Dillon (400m) and Michael McGrath (1,200m) and freshmen A.J. Acosta (1,600m) and Andrew Wheating (800m) missed the school record by only .20 seconds, and easily met the 9:45.70 NCAA provisional standard. Going into the weekend, only two teams in the nation had run faster than the Ducks, but the upcoming final weekend of the regular season is typically when most teams qualify for the collegiate finale.
In the first day of the men’s heptathlon, freshman Ashton Eaton stood in third place with a nine-point first day personal best score (3,152), and trailed Chris Richardson of Long Beach State (first, 3,201) and Joshua Kinnaman of Arizona State (second, 3,170). Fellow Duck frosh Marshall Ackley followed in 11th place with a first day tally of 2,241 points.
Eaton cleared a four-inch personal best in the high jump (6-6), and was only .01 seconds off his season best in the 60m (6.93) from Seattle four weeks earlier. His other two marks Friday included 23-8 in the long jump and 39-2 1/2 in the shot put.
Ackley’s scored first day season bests in the 60m (7.60) and high jump (5-5), and added marks of 19-0 3/4 in the long jump and 34-2 in the shot put.
In the sprints, sophomore Jonathan Stewart ran a .04-second season best in the 60m prelims and ranked fifth overall (6.88). In only his second track meet as a Duck, he climbed two spots on the UO all-time list to third ahead of fellow football player Allan Amundson (6.89, 2002) and Cory Gray (6.90, 2002).
Junior Phillip Alexander also scored in the 200m final with a .13-second personal best (fourth overall, 21.46) that tied teammate Marcus Dillon for fifth all-time on the UO all-time list.
Sophomore Walter Thurmond III continued to improve in the 60m hurdles and ranked third overall in the prelims with a .02-second personal best (8.04) that left him fifth all-time for UO, and only .01 seconds behind former two-time NCAA outdoor veteran Akobundu Ikwuakor (8.03).
Also in the 60m hurdles prelims, sophomore Jared Huske was only .09 seconds back (ninth overall, 8.12).
In other distance action, sophomore Jon Thomas moved to fifth all-time for UO in the 5,000m in his event debut (third, 14:10.37) and missed the NCAA provisional mark (14.10.00) by barely a quarter-second. The Des Moines, Iowa native’s time was more than 34 seconds better than his previous indoor best in the event (14:44.89) from ’06.
In the long jump, sophomore Alexey Shkuratov scored three points for the Ducks with his first mark of the season in the long jump final (sixth, 23-0).

On Saturday, the Duck squads return for second and final day action in the event that featured eight teams from the Pac-10 and two other squads from the Big Sky Conference.
