Dan Straily
- Title:
- Director of Pitching Development
A former Major League pitcher, Dan Straily is in his second season serving as the director of pitching development on Mark Wasikowski’s staff while adding assistant coaching duties in 2027. The eight-year big league veteran spent time with the Oakland Athletics, Houston Astros, Cincinnati Reds, Miami Marlins and Baltimore Orioles during his career.
In his first season as the director of pitching development at Oregon, Straily helped tutor a staff that set a new Big Ten Conference record for strikeouts (676) while also setting team records in conference only games for strikeouts (327) and innings pitched (266.1). Nationally, the Ducks’ staff ranked in the top 20 in the country in six statistical categories including two top 10 rankings and a pair in the top five. The Ducks finished 2nd in shutouts (9), third in hits allowed per nine innings (7.12), eight in both strikeouts per nine innings (11.2) and WHIP (1.24), 15th in ERA (4.13) and 16th in strikeout-to-walk ratio.
Individually in 2026, a pair of Ducks earned All-America honors while three were named to the Big Ten Conference All-Conference Team. Relief pitcher Tanner Bradley earned a spot on four different All-America teams. He was a first-team pick by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers of America (NCBWA), a second-team selection by Baseball America and D1Baseball and a third-team choice by Perfect Game. Starting pitcher Will Stanford claimed third-team All-America honors from Perfect Game as well. Bradly (first-team) and Sanford (second-team) were joined by Ducks’ closer Devin Bell (second-team) on the B1G all-league team. Sanford was also named the most valuable player at the Eugene Regional Tournament and was joined by fellow Oregon starting pitcher Cal Scolari on the Big Ten All-Tournament Team.
Three of Oregon’s pitchers on the staff were selected in the top 10 rounds of the 2026 Major League Baseball Draft. The Chicago White Sox selected Scolari in the fifth round with the 137th overall pick, while the Los Angeles Dodgers picked a pair of Ducks selecting starting pitcher Miles Gosztola in the eighth round (pick No. 253) and closer Devin Bell in the 10th round (pick No. 313).
Straily, a 2026 University of Oregon graduate, finished his MLB career 44-40 with a 4.56 ERA while making 140 starts and playing in 156 games. He struck out 681 batters in 803.1 innings while finishing with a 1.32 WHIP. He started more than 20 games in four different seasons, while making more than 30 starts in back-to-back seasons in 2016 and 2017. In 2016, he went 14-8 with a 3.76 ERA for the Reds while posting a 3.76 ERA. A 24th-round draft pick in 2009, Straily made his MLB debut on August 8, 2012.
After graduating from Springfield High School in Springfield, Ore., Straily spent one season at Western Oregon before transferring to Marshall. In two seasons with the Thundering Herd, Straily won nine games while fanning 115 in 153.2 innings over 29 outings.
