Jake Angier is in his fourth season as the team’s pitching coach, joining Mark Wasikowski’s staff on June 26, 2019.
During his 14-year career as a pitching coach, Angier has coached at four different schools and in three different conferences. In addition to a number of all-conference pitchers, he has tutored two All-Americans, three freshman All-Americans and a pair of all-region pitchers.
Oregon (2020-present)
After losing all three members of his starting rotation following the 2021 season, Angier pieced together a staff in 2022 that included seven new pitchers that helped Oregon to its second consecutive postseason appearance.
Oregon lost its opening-day starter for the season after just three starts and did not get the services of another projected weekend arm until mid-April. Despite the injuries, the Ducks’ staff won 36 games, the seventh most in school history, while finishing with 467 strikeouts (6th most in school history) in 539 innings (7th most at Oregon).
Individually, closer Kolby Somers earned first-team All-Pac-12 Conference honors for the second consecutive season under Angier’s guidance. The Ducks’ stopper finished with nine saves (tied for seventh most in school history) to run his career total to 21 (second all-time at Oregon). Sophomore Logan Mercado developed into one of the Pac-12’s premier relievers, leading the Ducks in both wins (6) and ERA (2.61) while fanning 41 and walking just 12 in 41.1 innings pitched (25 appearances).
Led by Somers and Mercado, Oregon’s bullpen put together a remarkable season while the Ducks battled injuries in the rotation. The relievers combined to win 25 games (25-12) while boasting a 3.74 ERA in 61 appearances. Fourteen pitchers came out of the ‘pen to combine for 291 strikeouts in 312.2 innings pitched. By comparison, UO opponents’ bullpens combined for 16 wins and a 6.84 ERA in 61 appearances.
In 2021, Angier’s pitchers played a vital role in Oregon’s success on the diamond. The pitching staff ranked 18th in the nation and second in the Pac-12 in ERA (3.71), while also ranking in the top 35 nationally in shutouts (15th), strikeout-to-walk ratio (29th) and WHIP (35th). The Ducks led the Pac-12 in shutouts (6) and strikeout-to-walk ratio (2.82), while ranking third in WHIP (1.31).
The Ducks finished the season 39-16, making their first NCAA Regional Tournament appearance since 2015. Oregon battled into the final weekend for the Pac-12 title eventually finishing in second, one game out of first place with a 20-10 Pac-12 record and hosted its first regional tournament since 2013.
Oregon tied the school record by striking out 513 opposing batters finishing second all-time with 9.3 strikeouts per nine innings. The Ducks also finished fifth all-time in wins (39), seventh in fewest walks per nine innings (3.3) and eighth in innings pitched (495.0).
Individually, closer Kolby Somers claimed NCBWA third-team All-America honors after finishing 12th in the nation and third in the Pac-12 in saves with 11. Somers was also one of two Oregon pitchers to claim first-team All-Pac-12 honors joining starter Robert Ahlstrom, who led the conference in wins (9), ERA (2.50) and strikeout-to-walk ratio (5.75). Starter Cullen Kafka joined Ahlstrom and Somers on the all-league team, earning honorable mention honors. Ahlstrom also earned a spot on the Pac-12 Conference All-Defensive Team.
Oregon’s rotation of Ahlstrom, Kafka and Brett Walker combined to go 20-9 with a 3.04 ERA in 44 combined starts. Ahlstrom became just the second Oregon pitcher to earn Pac-12 Conference Pitcher of the Week accolades three times in a season, joining David Peterson who claimed the award three times in 2017. Kafka added one conference pitcher of the week honor while Walker earned a national pitcher of the week award from Collegiate Baseball.
In his first season, Angier’s staff got off to a quick start before the 2020 season came to an abrupt halt after 15 games because of COVID-19. Led by Walker (3-0, 0.84 ERA), the Ducks’ pitchers finished the season with a 3.85 ERA with 105 strikeouts in 135.2 innings pitched.
Walker finished the season allowing just two runs on 13 hits with 10 strikeouts and one walk in 21.1 inning pitched. He held opponents to a .176 batting average and finished second in the Pac-12 Conference in strikeout-to-walk ratio (10-to-1), WHIP (0.66) and walks per nine innings (0.42) while ranking third in wins. Nationally, he ranked 10th in walks per nine innings, 19th in WHIP, 23rd in wins and 31st in strikeout-to-walk ration.
Angier developed a bullpen early in the season that showed promise behind late-inning arms Hunter Breault and Somers. The duo combined to toss 17.2 innings in 13 appearances allowing no earned runs with Somers limiting opposing hitters to a .077 batting average and Breault holding hitters to a .152 average.
Sacramento State (2014-19)
Angier came to Oregon after spending six seasons at Sacramento State. He started his tenure with the Hornets as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator before being promoted to pitching coach in 2017 and associate head coach in 2019.
During Angier’s three seasons as Sacramento State’s pitching coach, the Hornets boasted the Western Athletic Conference’s top pitching staff. Sac State led the WAC in ERA all three seasons, while also leading the conference in WHIP, strikeout-to-walk ratio and hits allowed per nine innings each season.
Sacramento State advanced to NCAA Regionals three times in Angier’s six seasons with the Hornets and twice (2017, 2019) with him serving as the team’s pitching coach. In 2018, Sacramento State’s pitching staff finished among the nation’s top 12 in four separate statistical categories: walks allowed per nine innings (2nd), strikeout-to-walk ratio (5th), shutouts (T8th) and WHIP (12th). In all, the Hornets had five top 50 national statistical rankings in 2018 while cracking the top 50 in three categories in 2017 and four in 2019.
While at Sacramento State, Angier was a member of Reggie Christiansen’s staff and coached with current Illinois State head coach Steve Holm and Bill Kernen. Holm served as Wasikowski’s pitching coach at Purdue from 2017-18 while Kernen spent time as the head coach at Cal State Northridge (1989-95) and Cal State Bakersfield (2009-2015).
North Dakota State (2011-13)
Before coaching at Sac State, Angier spent three seasons as the pitching coach at North Dakota State where his pitching staffs set a number of school records.
South Dakota State (2009-10)
The South Dakota State graduate started his coaching career at his alma mater where he was the pitching coach while working as a graduate assistant.
