Adrian Klemm
- Title:
- Associate Head Coach/Offensive Line/Run Game Coordinator
Head coach Dan Lanning hired Adrian Klemm as Oregon’s associate head coach, offensive line coach, and run game coordinator on December 28, 2021, bringing one of the West Coast’s top recruiters to Eugene. Klemm was most recently the offensive line coach for the Pittsburgh Steelers.
"I am really excited that Adrian Klemm is joining us here at Oregon," Lanning said at the time of the hiring. "He is one of the very best offensive line coaches in the country and a great addition to this staff. Our student-athletes will benefit greatly from his extensive experience in the NFL, where he has spent the last three seasons as a coach with the Pittsburgh Steelers and was a second-round draft pick and three-time Super Bowl champion as a player. His familiarity with the Pac-12 and working on the West Coast is also very valuable. Providing a tremendous experience for our student-athletes is always the top priority here at Oregon, and they are getting a terrific teacher and mentor in Coach Klemm. I am fired up to welcome Adrian and his sons, Jalen and Nikko, to the Oregon family."
Prior to coaching in the NFL, Klemm produced several all-conference players and NFL Draft picks at both UCLA and SMU. He was nationally recognized as a recruiter at both stops. Klemm earned 2012 Pac-12 Recruiter of the Year recognition from 247 Sports, and he was named the top non-BCS AQ Recruiter in the nation by Rivals.com in 2010.
The Los Angeles-native played his college football at Hawaii and was selected by the New England Patriots in the 2000 NFL Draft. He won three Super Bowls with New England, where he played for four seasons before spending a year with the Green Bay Packers.
Pittsburgh Steelers (2019-21)
Klemm coached in the NFL as the Steelers’ assistant offensive line coach from 2019-2020. He was promoted to offensive line coach before the 2021 season. The Steelers went 29-19-1 in his three seasons with the team, winning the AFC North division title in 2020.
Klemm’s offensive line paved the way for rookie running back Najee Harris to run for 1,200 yards in his first NFL season in 2021. The Steelers finished the season with a 9-7-1 record and reached the Wild Card round of the NFL Playoffs.
The Steelers won the AFC North in 2020 while allowing the fewest sacks in the NFL. Pittsburgh’s 14 sacks allowed were seven fewer than the next closest teams, and the offensive line allowed a sack on just 2.1 percent of the team’s passing attempts. The Steelers were No. 1 in the NFL in that category by 1.3 percent, a significant lead considering the league’s second through tenth-best teams were separated by just 1.5 percent.
Pittsburgh went 8-8 in 2019 despite playing having four different quarterbacks attempt passes during Klemm’s first season as an NFL coach. His offensive line ranked ninth in the NFL in sacks allowed.
UCLA (2012-16)
A Los Angeles native, Klemm started working at UCLA in 2012 and immediately elevated the offensive line to be one of the best in the Pac-12. He spent two seasons as UCLA’s offensive line coach and run game coordinator before adding associate head coach duties in 2014. During Klemm’s five seasons in Westwood, eight Bruins earned All Pac-12 honors and one, Xavier Su’a-Filo, was a two-time All-American.
UCLA also reeled in several top recruiting classes with Klemm primarily responsible for recruiting the talent-rich areas of Los Angeles, Dallas and Atlanta. He helped the Bruins bring in one of the nation's top classes for 2012 and was named the Pac-12 Recruiter of the Year by 247 Sports. He followed it up by bringing in one of the nation's top offensive line groups in 2013 before being tabbed as one of the nation's top 25 recruiters by Rivals.com.
In 2016, two of Klemm's starters earned All Pac-12 honors. Center Scott Quessenberry earned first-team accolades and tackle Conor McDermott was a second-team selection for the second year in a row. McDermott also secured an invite to the Senior Bowl.
Klemm’s offensive line ranked first in the Pac-12 in fewest quarterback sacks allowed in 2015 (1.25), a mark which ranked 19th in the nation. The total of 14 sacks was the second-lowest in school history. Paul Perkins became the first Bruin running back to eclipse the 1,000-yard mark in back-to-back seasons behind a line that included two all-league players. McDermott and Jake Brendel both earned second-team all-conference honors.
In 2014, the UCLA offensive line helped produce the leading rusher in the Pac-12 with 1,575 yards. Four UCLA offensive linemen earned all-conference honors, led by Brendel’s second-team selection. Caleb Benenoch, Alex Redmond and Quessenberry were each named honorable mention All Pac-12.
In each of Klemm’s first two seasons in Westwood, one of his linemen was chosen in the NFL Draft. Xavier Su’a-Filo’s selection with the first pick in the second round in 2014 was the highest for a UCLA offensive lineman since 1996. In 2013, Su'a-Filo earned the Morris Trophy as the top offensive lineman in the league according to the Pac-12 defensive linemen. Redmond developed into a first-team Freshman All-American under Klemm’s coaching.
In his first season with the Bruins, Klemm’s offensive linemen helped pave the way for the record-setting rushing attack. The linemen helped running back Johnathan Franklin establish new school records for most rushing yards by a player in a season, most all-purpose yards in a season and most 100-yard rushing games in a season. Senior guard Jeff Baca was selected in the 2013 NFL Draft. Su'a-Filo earned first-team all-conference honors and second and third-team All-America acclaim from several publications.
SMU (2008-11)
Klemm began his coaching career under his former college coach, June Jones, at SMU. He emerged as one of the nation’s top recruiters, earning national recognition from multiple outlets after helping the Mustangs sign what was then their highest-ranked class. Several offensive lineman developed into All Conference-USA players and NFL Draft picks under Klemm as SMU won back-to-back Conference USA titles in 2009 and 2010.
In 2011, SMU featured the nation's seventh-leading rusher in Zach Line (122.4 yards per game). Two Mustang offensive linemen went on to be selected in the 2012 NFL Draft. Josh LeRibeus went in the third round to Washington, and Kelvin Beachum was drafted in the seventh round by the Steelers.
As the Mustangs’ recruiting coordinator, Klemm helped SMU reel in the No. 50 class in the nation in 2011. The class was SMU’s best in the modern recruiting era, ranking more than ten spots higher than its previous high of No. 61.
On the field in 2010, Klemm tutored a young SMU line and guided Beachum to first-team All-Conference USA honors. He also led J.T. Brooks and Blake McJunkin to honorable mention all-conference accolades. His line helped the SMU offense set school records in total offense, passing yards, passing touchdowns and first downs among others. Line finished the season with 1,494 rushing yards, the second-best single-season total in school history, trailing only Eric Dickerson's 1982 effort.
Following the 2010 season, Klemm was named the top non-BCS AQ Recruiter in the nation by Rivals.com, and he was further recognized by the outlet as one of the Top 25 recruiters in the country. Other services took note as well, as FoxSports/Scout.com named him the Conference USA Recruiter of the Year.
In 2009, Klemm helped Beachum earn second-team all-conference honors. The offensive line blocked for an offense that passed for a then-school record total of 3,666 yards and produced the first collegiate 1,000-yard rusher under Jones. Klemm was promoted to the full-time offensive line coach after working with the linemen as a graduate assistant in 2008.
Playing Career and Personal
After a standout playing career at Hawai'i, Klemm was the 46th overall selection in the 2000 NFL Draft. He spent seven seasons in the NFL with the New England Patriots (five) and Green Bay Packers (two), winning three Super Bowl titles while with the Patriots. As a collegiate player, Klemm was the left tackle for Jones during his senior season (1999). He was a part of the biggest turnaround in NCAA history as Hawai'i improved from 0-12 to 9-4 and won a bowl game that season. Klemm earned his bachelor’s degree in liberal arts from Excelsior College in 2008.
