Demetrice Martin
- Title:
- Cornerbacks/Passing Game Coordinator
Dan Lanning announced the hiring of Demetrice Martin as Oregon’s cornerbacks coach and defensive pass game coordinator on December 23, 2021, bringing one of the West Coast’s top secondary coaches and recruiters to Eugene.
"I am so excited to welcome Demetrice Martin to our football staff here at Oregon," Lanning said at the time of the hire. "He brings a plethora of coaching experience on the West Coast and in the Pac-12, and he has developed a strong reputation as an elite recruiter out west over the last several years. The two characteristics I look for most in my search for coaches is relationships and development. Coach Martin definitely checks both those boxes. Demetrice has proven over time to be a great teacher and developer of men on and off the field.”
Martin joined the Oregon coaching staff with 15 years of experience in the Pac-12. The Pasadena, Calif.-native has made stops at Colorado, Arizona, UCLA, Washington and USC. He coached 15 all-Pac-12 defensive backs prior to coming to Eugene, and his teams reached 10 bowl games.
Martin coached at both Pasadena City College and Mt. San Antonio College to begin his career before joining Pete Carroll’s USC staff as a graduate assistant. As a player, he was a four year letterwinner at Michigan State from 1992-1995, earning first-team All-Big Ten honors in 1994.
Colorado (2020-21)
Martin’s two years in Boulder saw the Buffaloes go 8-10 including a trip to the 2020 Alamo Bowl. He was a member of head coach Karl Dorrell’s inaugural staff at Colorado.
In 2021, Martin mentored all-Pac-12 Honorable Mention choice Christian Gonzalez, who then joined the Ducks for the 2022 season as a transfer. The freshman led the team with five passes defended while also tying for fifth with 53 tackles, and he helped out in the run game with 5.0 tackles for loss.
Martin coached one of the Pac-12’s stingiest pass defenses in 2020. Colorado allowed just 55.6 percent of passes to be completed, the best mark in the league. Isaiah Lewis and Mekhi Blackmon tied for the team lead with six passes defended. Four Buffaloes picked off a pass in the six-game season.
Arizona (2018-19)
Martin coached sophomore Lorenzo Burns to all-Pac-12 Honorable Mention honors in 2019. Burns picked off a team-high four passes, which ranked third in the conference. His 11 PBUs were good for sixth in the league. As a team, the Wildcats placed fifth in the Pac-12 in interceptions (11). In 2018, Martin mentored Burns as he broke up a 11 passes to lead the team as a freshman. Scottie Young Jr. grabbed a team-high three interceptions
UCLA (2012-17)
Martin spent six seasons in Westwood, where he mentored 11 all-league defensive backs. He also helped the Bruins recruit six straight classes ranked in the top-20 nationally after the 2011 class ranked 45th in the nation. UCLA went 47-31 during Martin’s six seasons on the coaching staff while also qualifying for five bowl games.
In 2016, the Bruin secondary ranked seventh in the nation in pass defense efficiency (105.8) and 22nd in the nation in interceptions (15). Those marks ranked second and third in the Pac-12. UCLA gave up just 12 touchdown passes on the year, the lowest total by a Pac-12 school. Randall Goforth ranked 31st in the nation in total interceptions (4) and 21st in the nation in passes defended (1.2). Jaleel Wadood was tied for 9th in the Pac-12 in tackles (7.0/g).
In 2015, the Bruin secondary led the Pac-12 in pass defense, allowing the fewest average yards per game and the lowest average yards per pass attempt (5.6) of any school in the 2015 season. UCLA also led the conference in pass defense efficiency (111.5), ranking 18th nationally in the category. The year prior, four of Martin’s defensive backs were honored with All Pac-12 selections. The unit ranked third in the Pac-12 in pass defense.
The 2013 season saw Martin prepare a secondary which featured three new starters. Fabian Moreau and Ishmael Adams were first-time starters at the corners. Adams led the team with four interceptions while Jefferson ranked third on the team in tackles (89) in his initial season as a starter. Martin mentored a veteran group in his first season with the Bruins. Senior defensive backs Sheldon Price and Andrew Abbott each snagged multiple interceptions in 2012.
Washington (2009-11)
Martin helped Huskies rebuild after the team went 0-12 the year before he joined the coaching staff. Washington made two bowl games during his three years in Seattle, going 7-6 in both seasons after rebounding from the winless season to go 5-7 in 2009. Martin helped UW back-to-back top-25 classes in 2010 and 2011.
Washington allowed the league’s fifth-lowest opponent completion percentage in 2011. Sean Parker, who Martin recruited as part of the Huskies’ 2010 class, led the team with four interceptions and six pass breakups. In 2010, Washington ranked second in the Pac-12 in passing defense. UW allowed Nebraska to total just 98 passing yards in a 19-7 Alamo Bowl victory.
Mt. San Antonio College (2008)
Martin made his second stop as the pass defense coordinator and secondary coach at Mt. San Antonio College in 2008. The Mounties won the Mission Conference with a 9-1 record as opponents completed only 49 percent of their passes while averaging just 5.7 yards per attempt.
USC (2006-07)
The Pasadena-native helped USC make the Rose Bowl twice as a graduate assistant under head coach Pete Carroll. The Trojans compiled a 22-4 record during Martin’s two years in Los Angeles, including Rose Bowl wins over Michigan and Illinois. USC was the second-best scoring defense in the country in 2007, keyed by a passing defense that ranked 15th nationally in yardage allowed and 19th in opponent completion percentage.
Mt. San Antonio College (2003-05)
Martin added responsibilities as the pass defense coordinator and continued to coach the secondary at Mt. San Antonio College in his second stint as a college coach. The Mounties went 23-9 during Martin’s first stint with the team. Mt. SAC also played in the 2003 and 2004 National Bowls.
Pasadena City College (2001-02)
After three years coaching high school defensive backs at Monrovia (Calif.) High School and John Muir (Calif.) High School, Martin moved up to the junior college ranks at Pasadena City College. The Lancers went 18-4 and won the Mission Conference twice with Martin as the secondary coach. The team also played in two bowl games.
Playing Career and Personal
Martin played collegiately at Michigan State, lettering four years as a wide receiver and cornerback (1992-95). He earned first-team All-Big Ten honors in 1994 when he led the conference with seven interceptions. He played professionally as a cornerback for the Scottish Claymores in NFL Europe (1997) and for the Houston Thunderbears (1998-99) in the Arena Football League. He signed as a free agent with the St. Louis Rams and spent time on the practice squad. Martin earned his bachelor’s degree in Liberal Arts from Excelsior (N.Y.) College in 2006.
Martin was born February 28, 1973 in Pasadena, Calif., and graduated from Pasadena’s Muir High School, where he lettered in football, baseball and track. He has two sons, Cole and Cassius and two daughters, Kori and Quincee.
