Nate Dreiling in in his first season as a defensive analyst on Mario Cristobal’s staff.
A former four-year All-American pick at NCAA Division II Pittsburg State, Dreiling spent the last three seasons at his alma mater after a two-year stint as a graduate assistant at Kansas.
PITTSBURG STATE (2017-19)
Dreiling returned to Pitt State for his first full-time coaching job in 2017 as safeties coach, before being promoted to defensive coordinator for the last two seasons.
In his first season with the Gorillas, he helped the Pitt State defense generate 25 turnovers overall and rank 19th nationally in fumble recoveries. The Gorilla defense also ranked second nationally in fourth down conversion percentage (.200).
In 2018, Dreiling oversaw a Pitt State defense that led the Mid-America Athletic Association in quarterback sacks and interceptions and ranked 22nd nationally in total defense (304.8 ypg).
In his final season at PSU, the Gorillas finished second in the MIAA in both pass defense and interceptions, while ranking 17th nationally in picks and 18th in sacks (3rd in the MIAA)
During his two seasons as the defensive coordinator, 17 Gorilla players were named to the all-league team on the defensive side of the ball including five safeties. In 2018, safety Morgan Selemaea claimed honorable mention All-America recognition while also earning second-team All-MIAA accolades.
Three of Pitt State’s all-league players during Dreiling’s two seasons as defensive coordinator claimed first-team honors. Defensive lineman Simanu’a Thomas earned back-to-back first-team recognition in 2018 and 2019, while cornerback KiAnte Hardin was a first-team choice in 2019.
While coaching safeties in 2017, a pair of Dreiling’s players were on the All-MIAA teams -- Marcus Brantley on the second team and honorable mention selection Josh Hornback.
KANSAS (2015-2016)
Dreiling started his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Kansas. He spent the 2015 season working with linebackers and the 2016 season with the defensive line.
In his final year in Lawrence, Dreiling helped coach a productive defensive line that finished with a pair of All-Big 12 Conference performers. Defensive end Dorance Armstrong, a four-round pick of the Dallas Cowboys in the 2018 NFL Draft, claimed Associated Press first-team honors after leading the conference in tackles for loss (20.0) and finishing second in sacks (10.0), good for 10th and 19th respectively in the nation.
The AP named defensive end Daniel Wise a second-team all-league selection, while he received an honorable mention nod from the Big-12 coaches. Wise ranked 11th in the league with 10.0 TFL.
PLAYING CAREER & PERSONAL
Dreiling garnered All-America honors all four years as a linebacker for the Gorillas (2010-13), earning consensus first-team All-America honors as well as NCAA Division II National Defensive Player of the Year accolades from the Don Hansen Football Committee in 2011.
Dreiling received first-team All-MIAA honors in each of his final three seasons (2011-13), including being named the 2011 MIAA Defensive Player of the Year. He was a second-team All-MIAA pick as a redshirt freshman in 2010.
Dreiling set both PSU and MIAA records for career tackles (491) and helped the Gorillas capture the 2011 NCAA Division II National Championship. He also earned CoSIDA Academic All-America® honors following his senior season in 2013.
Dreiling earned a bachelor’s degree in general studies from Pitt State in December 2013.
He and his wife, Alexa, have a daughter, Baylor, who was born on Feb. 6, 2020.
