Jo Koons enters her second season as the volunteer assistant coach on head coach Melyssa Lombardi’s staff after joining the program on Aug. 20, 2019.
Working primarily with the defense, the Ducks were one of the best defensive teams in the country in Koons’ first season. Oregon finished second in the country in fielding percentage at .986 with the infielders committing just seven errors all season. The Ducks went eight straight games to start the season without making an error while no infielder committed more than two errors all season.
Koons came to Oregon after spending the 2019 season as an assistant coach at her alma mater, Utah State. The Chico, Calif., native coached outfielders and slappers for the Aggies, a year after she spent the 2018 season as the head coach at Lassen College in Susanville, Calif.
Prior to that, Konns started her coaching career started at Stanford in 2016 as a volunteer assistant coach, and she was in the visitors’ dugout for Oregon’s first ever game at Jane Sanders Stadium on March 24, 2019. Koons got her first full-time coaching role the next year in 2017 as an assistant coach at Colorado Christian.
Koons starred for Utah State from 2012-15 and established herself as one of the most versatile players in the nation, making at least one start at every position in the field throughout her career. Primarily a shortstop, Koons etched her name throughout the Aggies’ record book, ranking sixth all-time in triples and eighth in walks while playing in 201 career games.
Her best season came as a senior in 2015, when she hit .276 with 10 doubles, five triples, 25 RBIs and 36 runs scored, the third-most by an Aggie in single-season history.
Koons graduated from Utah State in May 2015 with a degree in interdisciplinary studies. She earned her Master’s degree in organizational leadership from Colorado Christian in 2018.
