Fourth-year coach Mike McNeill brings 26 years of experience to the Oregon coaching staff.
From 1996 to 2001, he served as the assistant women’s coach at Simon Fraser under Allison McNeill. This followed high school boys coaching stints at Heritage Park Secondary (1996-98), Hatzic Secondary (1989-96) and Mission Secondary (1987-89).
“Mike is a very strong, fundamental coach,” coach Bev Smith said. “He does an incredible job of working with our student-athletes individually. His knowledge of the game is out standing.”
In addition to his duties at Oregon, McNeill also has been an assistant coach on the Canadian National team since 2001.
He also was the coach of the BC Provincial Junior Women’s Team in 1992-93. The coach of the Provincial Junior Men’s team from 1987 to 1989, McNeill led it to two Canadian national championships. Be fore that, he be came an assistant men’s coach for the University of British Columbia from 1984 to 1985.
From 1979 to 1984, he was the men’s head coach at Simon Fraser and also served as an assistant there in 1978-79. McNeill, 50, began his coaching career in 1974 at Vancouver Community College, heading up the women’s program for one season.
In his coaching career, he has coached at more than 50 basketball camps.
He played collegiately at Simon Fraser from 1975 to 1977, serving as team captain his final two years. McNeill earned a bachelor’s degree in physical education from the University of British Columbia in 1986.
McNeill also competed for North Delta Secondary, achieving all-star honors his junior and senior seasons.
McNeill is married to Oregon’s associate head coach, Allison (Towriss) McNeill, who also played for the Ducks from 1979-81.
The McNeills are the first married coaching tandem in Oregon basketball history.
