Former Duck player and Eugene native Peg Swadener enters her third year on the Oregon coaching staff.
Swadener is primarily involved in recruiting as well as individual and team skill work. She is the third Oregon graduate on the coaching staff along with Smith and associate head coach Allison McNeill.
Swadener, a 1994 graduate of Oregon and 1989 graduate of Marist High School, spent the 2002-03 season as the top assistant at Idaho State. Before that, she was an assistant coach at Boise State for five years.
“Peg has excellent credentials and experience as an assistant coach in the Northwest,” coach Bev Smith said. “The fact she is a Duck is icing on the cake for us.”
Swadener, 34, got her start in coaching at her alma mater, Marist, in 1995. She directed the girls junior varsity basketball team to a 42-0 record in two seasons and helped coach the varsity to 3A championships in 1996 and 1997.
Originally a walk-on for the Ducks, she became a scholarship player under then-coach Elwin Heiny. A four-year letterwinner and one of Oregon’s top 3-point shooters, she led the Ducks with a 39 percent mark from long range her senior year, which still ranks 10th all-time on the single-season list. For her career, she made 79-of-216 on 3-pointers for 37 percent?the ninth best mark all-time at Oregon.
Following her senior season, Swadener earned UO’s Harry Ritchie Scholar-Athlete award and was a three-time Honorable Mention All-Academic selection by the Pac-10.
Swadener received her bachelor’s degree from Oregon in exercise and movement science and is nearing completion of a master’s degree in Excercise and Sports Science from Boise State.
She was born Sept. 6, 1971, in Eugene.
