THE OREGON DIFFERENCE: Ressler on the Oregon Women's Golf Team (12/08)
Q: When you were choosing a university what were key things that attracted you to the University of Oregon?
“The size of the school was important, and UO was a perfect fit. Compared to the bigger schools Oregon can feel more comfortable and less intimidating, yet it also has the advantages of a big school being in a major conference.”
Q: Was it important for you to be able to stay in the Pacific Northwest and still be able to play at the highest level of collegiate golf (ie the Pac-10)?
“I looked at some East Coast schools, too, but realized I loved the Northwest and wanted to say here. The golf courses and athletic facilities were top notch. The business school also attracted me with its famous sports marketing program.”
Q: Academically, what attracted you to the University?
“I’ve had a great experience in the sports marketing program. It’s been nice to develop relationships with various professors who teach multiple classes, and that rapport will also help me with landing internships and planning my career. The program’s reputation is great for internships and networking.”
Q: What types of unique and one-of-a-kind things do UO athletes take pride in (ie treatment center, Moshofsky Center, uniforms, etc.)?
“As seniors for our team, we get to visiting the Nike campus and learn how they design uniforms and meet with their golf department to pick out our uniforms which was awesome. Learning about the technology that goes into their clothing line was intriguing and not something other golfers get to see or learn about first-hand. As a team, we also get to go and tour their facilities, meet Phil Knight and various key golf people ? it’s a special honor to see a major multinational company from the inside. Closer to home, we get equal special treatment on our area golf courses, treatment facilities and Casanova Center.”
Q: Talk about some of the high points of each of the courses you can practice on.
“Eugene Country Club is by far one of the best courses I’ve played and my favorite course. It tests you on everything. You have to keep it on the fairway since it’s narrow, and the greens also challenge your short game. Emerald Valley’s wedge facility was something I had never seen before, and it helps you develop that part of your game. Shadow Hills is another great course. The last few times we were out there the greens were amazing even in the winter time ? it’s a great place to putt. I don’t know of a lot teams that have that variety and styles of courses to pick from. Eugene and Emerald are very different so we can tailor our qualifying to the course we will be playing.”
Q: Talk some about your teammates and the supportive atmosphere that you create for each other.
“On my recruiting visit, I noticed how well the team got along, and that’s stayed true since I’ve been here. Every year we seem to get closer and closer - we hang out with each other during practice and afterwards, and we really enjoy each others’ company. It’s a unique situation compared to a lot of teams. That was the deciding factor for me ? I wanted to create long-lasting relationships that would extend beyond golf.”
Q: Can you talk about your relationship with Meredith (Jones) and the advantages she offers you as a coach, both on and off the course?
“I love how it’s so easy to talk to Meredith. She’s your coach, but can also act like one of the girls and talk with you about anything. On the course, she’s great at helping us stay steady, and not get down or get too excited after a particular shot. She can talk to you in a way that keeps you relaxed. She sees a lot of things in regards to course management and helps me scout I wouldn’t normally pick out. I can be sometimes bee to simple in my scouting, and she’s good at knowing when to add details and when not to overwhelm me, and is also great at keeping me focused.”
