On collegiate scene, helped Duck squad cap fall ranked 25th and 26th in the GolfStat and GolfWeek national rankings, respectively. Played three of Oregon's four tournaments, and paced team twice in her nine rounds with her opening and closing scores in the Stanford Intercollegiate and led the Ducks in the overall standings (21st, 72-73-71-216). Opened fall with eighth-place finish in the Giustina Memorial Classic (76-74-78-228), and added another top-25 finish in the Kent Youel Invitational (21st-74-75-74-223). Reset program's single-round record in Indiana Invitational final round on the par-72, 5,938-yard Crooked Stick Golf Course (seven-under 65) in the regular season finale. A month before in early March, posted her third collegiate victory with her two-stroke win in the UNLV Spring Rebel Invitational and broke the Ducks' three-round tourney record with her eight-under 208 (69-69-70) on the par 72, 6,202-yard Boulder Creek Golf Club course. Also stood second on the team in three more fall events and the Duck Invitational in the spring (sixth overall, 75-77-72-224). Ended campaign with six rounds under-par (65, 69 (x3), 70, 71 (x2)) and two more at par (72). THE OREGON DIFFERENCE: Bristow on the Oregon Women's Golf Team (12/08)
Q: When you were choosing a university what were key things that attracted you to the University of Oregon?
“On my recruiting trip the atmosphere of Eugene and Oregon and the environment reminded me a lot of home back in New Zealand. The academic part was just important as the golf for me and my family, considering that the education will be much more important after golf is over. The feel around campus was great, and all of the people I met were extremely friendly.”
Q: Now that you've seen various universities around the nation, what are advantages about playing in the Pacific Northwest and the Pac-10 Conference?
“It’s the best of many things. As a UO student-athlete, you feel like you’re part of a family since there’s always someone looking after you and in bigger terms preparing for life. Picking Oregon was an easy choice and the best decision for me. Compared to where I’m from, it was important for me to find a city that fit me and had a comfort factor more than a big city like L.A. or in the East. In Eugene and on campus, you’re not just a number but a person. If you’re a golfer, people on campus know who you are, which wouldn’t happen at a bigger school.”
Q: Academically, what attracted you to the university?
“I’m interested by all aspects of sport ? body, mind and health. Psychology is a real interesting component of golf so being able to study it as a major has obviously helped me with my golf, but also in daily life with people. Being able to study it has proved fascinating and a blessing.”
Q: What types of unique or one-of-a-kind things do UO athletes take pride in (ie treatment center, Mo Center, uniforms, etc.)?
“The new treatment center was a huge bonus to be around. The staff you have access to is important. The psychologist, nutritionist, academic advisors and athletic trainers ? any question you have you can find a specialist that can help you or find an answer. ”
Q: Talk about some of the high points of each of the courses you can practice on.
“Eugene Country Club is really well-known for the major events it’s hosted, and is a classical course. It’s challenging with big, beautiful trees, but also very narrow. The greens are very undulating and it’s always in great condition. At Emerald Valley we have a great course and practice center. The all-weather canopy lets us practice every day of the year, and it offers a huge chipping area and pitching green. Emerald is a long course, and even longer in the winter, so it challenges you to improve your scoring and shot-making. Shadow Hills is like Eugene CC ? well groomed with lots of trees, fast greens, and great practice facilities for chipping and putting. They all complement each other and provide different types of shots, including and pitching.”
Q: Talk some about your teammates and the supportive atmosphere that you all create for each other.
“We have a really good team, talent and personality-wise. We all get along well, and everyone supports each other. We’ll push each other to get better at practice, and there’s also a lot of competition to go to tournaments which makes us take it seriously. Then once that’s done with, we can still hang out and be friendly again, so that’s a great dynamic. Everyone has a lot of respect for each other. That’s hard to maintain that balance so we’re a unique team to maintain that ? it’s always been like that here. We’re very open as a group, and everybody communicates well with each other.”
Q: Can you talk about your relationship with Meredith and the advantages she offers you as a coach, both on and off the course?
“She has a fresh approach that is easy for us to relate to. She’s lived the same situations we have and can relate to us. She can relate to us as both a coach and player really easily. She’s really decisive when you ask a question which gives you confidence when you making a decision. Personally on the course, I find her especially helpful in maintaining an even keel. Last year I had my best round ever (and a school record) and she walked with me the last two holes. She was able to keep me focused on each shot and not the outcome and helped me finish how I wanted to finish.”
