Duck Women Conclude Second Day at ITA Regionals
10/25/03 | Women's Tennis
STANFORD, Calif. ? The Duck women's tennis squad competed Saturday in the second day of competition at the Omni Hotel ITA Regionals in Stanford, Calif. The ladies of Oregon battled through a tough day as they split their three wins with three losses in singles play and then failed to find victory in their doubles matches.
Daria Panova opened for the Ducks Saturday morning defeating Sunel Niewoudt of Idaho, 6-0 6-2. She then continued to the second round of competition to face Stanford's Theresa Logar and claimed her second victory of the day, 6-3 2-6 6-1. Senior Courtney Nagle and freshman Monica Hoz de Vila both came up with losses today after falling to Washington's Saskia Nauenberg (6-2 6-3) and Stanford's Joanna Kao (6-1 2-6 6-4), respectively. Though, if there were one player who truly stood out Saturday to head coach Nils Schyllander, it was freshman Dominika Dieskova who defeated ninth seeded Anna Eriksson of Sacramento State, 6-0 3-6 6-0. Dieskova in the second round faced Stanford's Lauren Barnikow but fell short in the end after a hard fought three-set match, 3-6 6-0 6-2.
"Dominika really made a name for herself by beating a really good player and then losing in a close three-setter to one of the top players in college tennis," stated a proud coach Schyllander. "She definitely put herself on the map here this weekend."
In doubles play, Daria Panova and Courtney Nagle were defeated by Emilia Anderson and Anne Yelsey of Stanford, 8-5. Then the second Cardinal tandem of Alice Barnes and Joanna Kao outlasted Oregon's Dominika Dieskova and Anna Leksinska, 8-5. The third doubles match for the Ducks proved to be quite heart-pounding as the second ranked California duo of Raquel Kops-Jones and Sasha Podkolzina narrowly defeated junior Ester Bak and sophomore Jamie Marshall, 9-8, with a tiebreaker that found the Ducks just three points short of victory, 7-4.
The Ducks continue ITA Regional play Sunday in day three of the tournament. Daria Panova will open for the Ducks at 9 a.m. against Washington's Claire Carter.
