Ducks Fly to Third after One Round at Washington
10/04/04 | Women's Golf
SAMMAMISH, Wash. -- Three Oregon women's golfers were among the top 10 individuals as the Ducks opened the 23rd annual Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational in third place with a 12-over 300 Monday at the par-72, 6,192-yard Sahalee Golf and Country Club.
Senior Johnna Nealy shot a 1-over 73 and was tied for second. Nealy, from Grants Pass, Ore., opened her round with a double bogey, but was nearly perfect afterward. She had three birdies and only one bogey in her final 17 holes, including a birdie on her 18th hole of the day to drop to 1-over.
Sophomore Kim McCready and junior Erin Andrews joined Nealy in the top 10. McCready matched her career-low with a 2-over 74 and was tied for fifth. The Placerville, Calif., native got off to a rough start with four bogeys in her first nine holes, but recovered nicely with a pair of birdies during her last nine.
Andrews, from Las Vegas, Nev., was tied for ninth at 3-over 75 and had only one major mistake, a triple bogey on the par-4 seventh, to go along with a pair of birdies and a pair of bogeys.
Even Oregon's highest counter of the day, junior Michelle Timpani's 6-over 78, was good enough to tie for 25th place.
Nealy, McCready and Andrews were all within striking distance of first round individual leader Karin Sjodin of Oklahoma State, who shot a 2-under 70. Nealy was three strokes back and tied with Stanford's Jenni Tangtiphaiboontana and Eileen Vargas of Pepperdine, while McCready led a group of four golfers four strokes off the pace.
The 90-minute fog delay proved to be no obstacle for No. 8 Oklahoma State, which claimed the first round lead at 8-over 296. No. 9 Pepperdine was two strokes back at 298, followed by Oregon at 300, USC at 303 and No. 20 Stanford in fifth at 308.
No. 2 Washington and Washington State were tied for sixth at 310, followed by No. 22 Brigham Young at 314 and Nevada-Las Vegas and San Francisco tied for ninth at 318.
The second of three rounds gets underway Tuesday at 10:15 a.m. and live scoring will be available on line at www.golfstat.com.
