EUGENE, Ore. ? Kim Welch won individual medalist honors for the third consecutive year to lead Washington State to its second straight Oregon Duck Invitational title Tuesday at the par-72, 5,968-yard Eugene Country Club.
Welch and teammate Maria Kostina both shot final rounds of 1-under 71 to lift the Cougars to a one stroke victory over host Oregon. WSU finished the event at 913, while the Ducks came in at 914. Portland State was third at 945 and Cal State Northridge and Long Beach State tied for fourth at 959.
Welch, a junior from Sacramento, defeated Oregon's Therese Wenslow and Northridge's Elizabeth Allen by five shots. Welch, who won the Oregon Duck Invitational in 2001 at Mallard Creek and last year at Shadow Hills, finished 2-over 218 for the tournament.
Wenslow fired a 2-over 74 Tuesday and her second-place tie marked a career-best finish for the sophomore from Bunkeflostrand, Sweden. She and Allen came in at 7-over 223.
Six Ducks finished the tournament in the top 15. Johnna Nealy, a junior from Grants Pass, Ore., and Erin Andrews tied for seventh at 230. It was the best finish of the season for Nealy and matched her career high, set two years ago as a freshman at the Spartan Invitational. It was also the fourth top 20 finish in five events this season for Andrews, a sophomore from Las Vegas, Nev.
Also for Oregon, sophomore Michelle Timpani, competing unattached, notched her first career top 10 finish by tying for ninth at 231. Junior Jess Carlyon recorded her highest finish of the season and second-highest of her career by tying for 11th at 234 and freshman Kim McCready tied for 13th at 236. Senior Katie Cunningham, another Oregon individual, tied for 29th at 248 for her best career finish.
The Ducks next return to action March 22-23 for the Colby Invitational in Carmel, Calif.
