Women?s Golf Finishes Ninth at Peg Barnard for Seventh Top 10 of 2003-04
04/11/04 | Women's Golf
STANFORD, Calif. ? The Oregon women's golf team shot a final round 314 to remain in ninth place at conclusion of the two-round Peg Barnard California Collegiate, played Sunday on the par-72, 6,159-yard Stanford Golf Course.
Sophomore Michelle Timpani led Oregon with her second straight 78 and she finished tied for 25th at 12-over 156. Sophomore Erin Andrews tied for 30th at 157 following an 80 on Sunday, while Johnna Nealy, a junior from Grants Pass, Ore., tied for 34th at 158. Sophomore Therese Wenslow and freshman Kim McCready tied for 40th at 161.
No. 24 Stanford won the team competition with a 590 total. No. 12 Washington was second at 604, followed by UC Irvine at 609, Washington State at 610 and Denver at 618. San Jose State led the second five with a 621, followed by San Francisco (623), Oregon State (629), Oregon (631) and Nevada (633).
"Unfortunately we did not have a good round today," said Oregon coach Shannon Rouillard. "It was just a bad tournament for Ducks, but we need to put it behind us and get ready for the Pac-10s."
While the scores were poorer than what Rouillard would have hoped for, Oregon still managed to record its seventh top 10 finish of the season. The Ducks last recorded seven top 10s in one year in 2000-01, which was also the last season that Oregon earned a bid to the NCAA Regionals.
Kim Welch of Washington State won the individual title by shooting a 68 Sunday -- the only round of the tournament in the 60s -- to finish at 2-under 142. Welch, who won the Oregon Duck Invitational individual title earlier this season, was one stroke better than UC Irvine's Angela Won.
Next up for Oregon is the Pacific-10 Championships April 19-21 at Saticoy Country Club in Somis, Calif.
