Ducks Hand Huskies First Conference Loss
04/16/04 | Softball
SEATTLE, Wash. ? Oregon junior Erin Goodell picked a good time to hit her first home run of the season. Her leadoff solo shot ? a line drive over the left field fence ? in the seventh inning, led the No. 14 Ducks to a 2-1 win over the No. 5 Washington Huskies, ending their unbeaten conference streak and dropping them to 28-8 overall, 4-1 Pac-10. The win improves the Ducks' record to 31-10, 5-2 ? their best conference start since 1989.
Since arriving at Oregon, head coach Kathy Arendsen is 3-0 in Seattle and 3-1 overall vs. the Huskies. "Anytime you can go on the road in the Pac-10 and get a win, it's a great accomplishment," Arendsen said. "They have dedicated fans and a great hometown environment so for our kids to keep rallying and keep battling shows our true character and poise." Oregon freshman Kristi Leiter (Lake Stevens, Wash.) gave her hometown fans something to cheer about as her solo home run in the fifth inning put the Ducks ahead 1-0. The lead held until the bottom of the sixth inning when Washington freshman Dominique Lastrapes doubled to lead off the inning and later scored an unearned run with two outs to tie the game, 1-1. Moments later, Goodell took the 2-1 pitch deep over the left field fence to give Oregon the lead again. Oregon pitcher Ani Nyhus struck out 11 and walked none en route to improving her record to 16-6. Washington junior Ashley Boek (19-5) took the loss. Oregon sophomore Dani Baird (Mt. Vernon, Wash.) broke up the no-hitter in the fourth inning with a single through the right side and finished the game 1-for-2 with walk.
