Nyhus And The Ducks Shutout Arizona State To Improve To 7-3 In Conference Play
04/23/04 | Softball
EUGENE ? Oregon pitcher Ani Nyhus struck out 11 batters to come out on top of what was a pitchers dual versus Arizona State at Howe Field Friday afternoon. Nyhus led the Ducks to a 1-0 victory as Oregon improved to 33-11 overall, 7-3 Pacific-10 Conference while the Sun Devils dropped to 30-22, 0-8.
Nyhus won by shutout for the seventh time this season ? her third in conference play ? as she moved into a tie for seventh all-time on the career shutout list. Her 11 strikeouts brought her season total to 139 ? fifth all time on the single season strikeout list. Nyhus has had more than 10 strikeouts in four games this season, including two conference games. "You can't overlook anybody in this conference," Oregon head coach Kathy Arendsen said. "I didn't think our hitters made great adjustments, but I thought we pitched excellent and played great defense." Defense proved to be the key as Oregon scored its lone run on an Arizona State error. Kayleen Hudson doubled off the right field wall and scored when Arizona State first baseman Kari Reidhead committed an error that would have ended the inning. The error allowed freshman Kristi Leiter to reach base and scored Hudson to give the Ducks the early lead. Hudson's hit was Oregon's only until the sixth inning when Ashley Richards and Erin Goodell each singled. Arizona State pitcher Ashley Werschky (6-6) struck out just one batter, but walked none and allowed Oregon just three scattered hits. Nyhus (18-7) allowed just two hits and walked one in winning her seventh conference game. Oregon hosts top-ranked Arizona Saturday at 2 p.m.
