Duck Men Race to Second in Pac-10 Track Champs; Women Repeat Seventh
05/15/04 | Track and Field
TUCSON, Ariz. - The University of Oregon men's and women's track and field teams ended the first of three stages of the championship season Saturday in the Pacific-10 Conference Championships, held at the University of Arizona's Roy Drachman Stadium.
The Duck men added another individual title courtesy of sophomore hurdler Eric Mitchum (13.62), and did their best to hold off the meet favorite UCLA which ultimately claimed the title with 143 points. The Duck men followed in second place with 130 points, ahead of ASU (third, 120), USC (fourth, 95), Arizona (fifth, 93), Stanford (sixth, 76), Cal (seventh, 75), Washington (eighth, 45) and WSU (ninth, 41).
UO's top-two finish was its third straight under head coach Martin Smith after the Ducks won the 2003 title (131) and took second in 2002 (125). The Ducks have claimed five team titles since the meet's inception in 1979 (1979, 1986, 1990, 1991, 2003) and have eight other runner-up finishes including this weekend's in the meet's 26 editions.
The Women of Oregon showed equally well with another form-chart buster and replicated last year's seventh-place finish seventh with 58 points. UCLA won the women's crown with 174 1/2 points, ahead of a Stanford (second, 153), USC (third, 111), ASU (fourth, 97), Cal (fifth, 68), Washington (sixth, 66), Oregon (seventh, 58), WSU (eighth, 45 1/2) and Arizona (ninth, 45).
"I thought the men competed hard and dug down deep time and time again, and did not back down," Oregon head coach Martin Smith said. "We came as close to our projected score as you could. UCLA simply responded with an amazing team effort of their own, and they deserve credit for that. I thought our women had an outstanding meet. Individually they all strived to maximize their potential and should be commended for doing the same thing all season. I think this season has been a great foundation as we continue to build both programs. There's a bright future for both since most of the talent is back on both sides."
Individually for the UO men in the sprints, sophomore Matt Scherer ran his second consecutive personal best in as many days in the 400 (45.95) in an event taken by the ASU duo of Lewis Banda (first, 44.58) and Jason Barton (second, 44.82). The Sumner, Ill., native Scherer entered the meet seeded sixth with a prior season best of 47.09, and initially rewrote his all-time mark of 46.40 from indoors in 2004 with Friday's prelim time (46.20). Even more impressive, the Duck had missed much of March's training after he had strained a hamstring in the NCAA 4x400 final on March 13 in Fayetteville, Ark.
In the 200, junior Kedar Inico ended sixth in the final (21.19) - four places better than his pre-meet ranking (10th) based on his prior best of 21.47. The first-term transfer from Barton Community College and Queens, NY native had logged a slightly better personal best (21.17) on Friday night in his prelims, after he arrived in Eugene with a prior best of 21.66. USC's Wes Felix won the event (20.43) by .14 seconds over an ASU trio that went 2-3-4.
Scherer and Inico played critical parts on one of the evening's most exciting events, the 4x400 relay. The combination of sophomore Travis Anderson, senior Brandon Holliday, Inico and Scherer battled UCLA for runner-up honors as Scherer made up a 12-meter disadvantage on the anchor with 200 left to go, and passed Bruin Deny Vershear in the final 30 meters. At the line Scherer pumped his arm to celebrate the Ducks' third school record in the past year (3:03.49), and this time by a whopping 2.51-second margin. The unit of Anderson, Holliday, Roderick Dotts and Scherer ran a former best of 3:06.40 indoors in February at Iowa State, and also erased the record in the NCAA prelims last year (3:06.83). Overall, event favorite ASU won (3:01.26) by a two-second margin over Oregon.
In the other relay, the Duck 4x100 were thwarted in the early evening by a bad exchange from their second (Scherer) and third legs (Inico) and were disqualified for being out of the exchange zone, as was UCLA which had committed the same mistake just prior in the event. ASU won that relay, too, by an almost half-second margin (38.97) over USC (second, 39.46).
In the 110 hurdles, sophomore Eric Mitchum defended his top seed status and won by .15 seconds in his second-fastest wind-legal time ever (13.62), and edged UCLA's Anthony Golston (second, 13.79). The Calumet City
"It really helped having the Bruins around me at the start," Mitchum said. "I knew what was expected from me, and it kept me focused on the race itself and not the pressure. I got out a little slow but then had a good middle part of the race and just finished it off from there."
In the same event, sophomore AK Ikwuakor improved two places on his pre-meet seeding and added third (14.26) in his second-fastest wind-legal time for the Ducks in his debut season in Eugene.
"Eric and Brandon were counted on so much coming into this event, so I wanted to pull my share of the load," Ikwaukor said. "I was hoping to go a little faster but today was about points, and I did my best to help out any way I could."
In the 400 hurdles, senior Brandon Holliday (fourth, 50.52) led a Duck 4-5-8 finish in the event with a .17-second personal best. Sophomore Eric Mitchum (fourth, 51.52) was .05 seconds off his personal best, and AK Ikwuakor added another point in eighth (54.46).
The Duck distance runners pulled off a pair of top-six efforts in the 5,000, as redshirt junior Eric Logsdon went top six for the third straight league showdown (fourth, 14:14.86), and redshirt senior Ryan Andrus came back for another 12 1/2 laps of racing and added sixth (14:22.52). Arizona's Kenyan sophomore Robert Cheseret completed his hat trick sweep of the 1,500, 5K and 10K with a one-second win (14:09.37) and surged to the lead in the final 250 meters and ended just ahead of Stanford's Ian Dobson (second, 14:10.44).
Sophomore high jumper Jeff Lindsey skied to another near-seven-foot mark (fourth, 6-11 3/4) in his Pac-10 debut, and sophomore decathlete Ryan Voge added points in a three-way tie for sixth (6-6 3/4). Also in the high jump, sophomore Teddy Davis and freshman Tommy Skipper no-heighted at the opening bar of 6-6 3/4.
In the evening's final field event, redshirt junior Leonidas Watson claimed fifth in the triple jump (50-8 3/4) with his third-best mark of the season - and less than nine inches off his other two better marks. Overall, top seed Allen Simms of USC (first, 52-3) won by five inches over Cal's Bruce Giron (second, 52-10).
In the hammer, junior Paul Etter took fifth (191-8) with his sixth meet past 190 feet this year. The first-year Duck entered the meet seeded fourth with a season best of 199-0 from the Oregon Invitational. UCLA's Dan Ames won the event by more than four feet (210-8) over USC's Michael Murray of USC (second, 206-3).
Freshman Brandon Tower launched his second-best ever throw in the discus and missed scoring by just over two feet (ninth, 159-6). The Beaverton, Ore., native entered the meet seeded 11th in the conference with his season and collegiate personal best of 166-6. From the Oregon Twilight. UCLA senior Dan Ames won the event by almost three feet (185-11) to become the first men's thrower to win the shot put, hammer and discus in the same meet.
In non-Duck events, WSU's Anthony Buchanan won the 100 (10.21) by .06 seconds over USC's Wes Felix (second, 10.27), UCLA's Ben Aragon and Jon Rankin went 1-2 in the 800 (1:48.45/1:48.77), and Arizona's Robert Cheseret won the 1,500 (3:43.50) by a half -second over Stanford's Donald Sage (second, 3:44.03).
On the women's side, junior Sofie Abildtrup shook off a tight hamstring muscle to take fifth in the 400 in her second-fastest career time (53.22) - and only .30 seconds off her personal best from Friday night (52.92).
The first-year Duck from Fredericksberg, Denmark entered the meet seeded 12th in the Pac-10 with her prior season best of 54.49 from the Pepsi Team Invitational, while her all-time prior best before this weekend stood at 54.16.UCLA's Monique Henderson won the event by more than a full second with a meet record (50.90) that bettered the former record held by former Duck Camara Jones from 1995 (51.44).
Abildtrup then came back to anchor the 4x400 relay to a four-second season best (seventh, 3:42.23) as the Ducks entered the meet seeded eighth with a prior best of 3:46.92. UCLA won the event by almost three seconds (3:32.39) over ASU (second, 3:35.13).
"I felt great yesterday, but today my hamstring tightened up and I was a little worried," Abildtrup said. "Once I got to the track, I got excited. It started feeling better and I knew I was ready to give it a go. This has been such an exciting weekend for me, and the teammates, and the relay showed that with a big season best, too, and we give a lot of the credit to Coach Light."
Redshirt sophomore Sara Schaaf took fifth in the 800 (2:09.40) in her second-fastest clocking in her career, and improved on her sixth-place pre-meet seeding based on her personal best of 2:08.08 from the Stanford Invitational. UCLA's Ashley Caldwell won the event by .58 seconds (2:06.88) over Stanford's Ashley Freeman (second, 2:07.46).
Redshirt junior Laura Harmon added her first league points in her third trip, but first at the 5,000 distance (eighth, 17:21.57). The Vancouver, Wash., native and Jesuit High School product led several of the opening laps and ran in the front pack of the nation's deepest conference for much of race's opening 2/3 of action. Redshirt sophomore Haripurkh Khalsa followed in 14th in her league debut (18:18.79). Up front, Stanford swept the top three places and was led by Sara Bei (first, 16:35.39) and Alicia Craig (second, 16:35.40).
The 400 hurdles was the UO women's top point-getter Saturday as redshirt senior Abby Andrus sped to third place (59.29) and a .61-second personal best. The Peoria, Ariz., native entered the meet seeded fifth in the Pac-10 with her season best of 59.9-hand-timed from the Oregon Twilight, and her FAT best of 59.90 came last year. Duck junior Kayla Mellott claimed her first league points in the event (seventh, 61.27) with her best fully automatic time and was just off her best hand-timed mark from two weeks ago at home (60.8-h). Overall in the event, top seed Sheena Johnson led the event (55.45) by more than three seconds at the finish (55.45) over Cal's Deena Slaton (58.65).
Senior pole vaulter Kirsten Larwin claimed her highest ever Pac-10 placing and fourth top-10 effort with a three-inch personal best (fourth, 13-6 1/4). The Eugene native out of South High School had owned a prior best of 13-3 1/2 from the Texas Relays in early April and had cleared additional +13-foot marks in two of her other three outdoor appearances (13-1 3/4 in the Pepsi Team Invite and 13-1 1/2 in the Oregon Preview).
"What a way to go out," Larwin said. "The conditions were great. I got some key third attempts at the last two heights. It was a little nerve-wracking, but I also knew that it was certainly doable, and I just went for it. It was great to have Emily out there because she had an amazing day, too, and that helped get me going."
Larwin had added then-personal bests in the Pac-10 champs as a junior in 2003 (seventh, 12-11 1/2), sophomore in 2002 (sixth, 12-10) and freshman (10th, 12-7 1/2). Overall in the event, Washington's Kate Soma broke her school record by five inches (14-2) and edged the NCAA indoor champion Chelsea Johnson of UCLA (second, 14-2) on fewer misses at their final clearance (Soma need two tries and Johnson needed three).
As mentioned by Larwin, freshman Emily Enders added fifth in the event (13-2 1/4) with a four-inch personal best of her own. The Snoqualmie, Wash., native entered the meet seeded 12th with her prior best of 12-10 1/4 from the Oregon Twilight, and altogether her first season she hiked her preseason best of 12-7 by more than seven inches.
The UO discus throwers claimed a pair of top-eight finishes courtesy of junior Bree Fuqua (fifth, 162-2) and senior Jill Hoxmeier (seventh, 160-7). The duo improved on their seventh- and eighth-place seedings and were barely two feet off their season and personal bests. Arizona's Rachel Varner won the event by almost four feet (178-4) over Cal's Sheri Russell (second, 174-6).
Junior Maegan Traver claimed seventh in her Pac-10 debut in the triple jump (39-7, w:0.7) with a 8 1/2-inch personal best after she entered the meet seeded 11th with a prior season best of 38-10 1/2 from the Oregon Twilight two weeks ago. Junior Clarice Hayward-Lee also competed but fouled her three preliminary attempts. UCLA's Candace Baucham won the event by almost a foot (44-8) over USC's Michelle Sanford (43-9 1/4).
In non-Oregon events, USC's Virginia Powell won the 100 (11.32) by .20 seconds over UCLA's Sani Roseby (second, 11.52), UCLA's Monique Henderson completed the sweep of the 200-400 with her half-lap effort (22.89, w:0.0) by .44 seconds over Cal's Antonette Carter (23.33), USC's Iryna Vaschuk won the 1,500 in a lean at the line (4:20.95) by .01 seconds over Stanford's top seed Arianna Lambie (second, 4:20.96), UCLA's Sheena Johnson (first, 12.79) and Sani Roseby (second, 12.96) took the top two places in the 100 hurdles, and UCLA won the 4x100 (first, 43.43) over USC (second, 44.13) in a meet record.
