
Men's Tennis Hammers Hawaii, 7-0

HONOLULU ? The University of Oregon men's tennis team (1-0, 0-0) opened the 2005 season on a good note, sweeping Hawaii, 7-0, and giving first-year head coach Kevin Kowalik his first coaching victory as a Duck.
No. 16-ranked and 2004 All-American Sven Swinnen led the way with an easy, 6-2, 6-2, victory over Hawaii's Dalibor Ptak at the No. 1 position. Fellow senior Manuel Kost started slow, but rebounded in the second and third sets to come away with a, 0-6, 6-2, 6-1, victory over Bryon Weinberg at the No. 2 position. Kost enters the spring season with a national rank of No. 57.
"It was a good way to start the season," Kowalik said. "The team came ready to play and we will look for more of the same tomorrow against a tough Florida State team."
Senior Chad Wilson made his first dual appearance as a Duck and didn't disappoint, defeating Chad Faulk, 7-5, 7-6, at the No. 3 spot. Junior returnees Thomas Bieri and Markus Schiller both notched wins at the No. 3 and No. 4 positions, while sophomore Vlad Pino cruised at the No. 6 position, taking care of Jamie Migia, 6-1, 6-1.
In doubles play, Oregon provided a clean sweep, winning at all three positions. Junior and Eugene native Arron Spencer teamed with Swinnen for a clutch 9-7 victory at the No. 2 position.
The Ducks stay on the Island and take on No. 41 Florida State, tomorrow (Sat.), at 3 p.m. Florida State defeated Hawaii 7-0 on Thursday.
