Pole Vaulters Fly High in Seattle Opener
01/15/05 | Track and Field
SEATTLE - In the University of Oregon's indoor track and field season opener, six men's and women's pole vaulters posted strong opening efforts in the Dempsey Indoor Preview, held in the University of Washington's Dempsey Indoor Arena, Sat., Jan. 15.
Freshman Tommy Skipper won the men's pole vault with an NCAA provisional mark of 17-8 1/2. The returning NCAA indoor runner-up opened the day with a first-attempt clearance at his final height, then missed three chances at 18-4 1/2 (5.60m) which would have tied his second-highest mark ever, behind his indoor school record of 18-8 3/4 from last February. The Sandy, Ore., native Skipper easily met the NCAA provisional mark of 17-0 3/4 (5.20m) Saturday, and was just shy of the NCAA automatic mark of 18-0 1/2 (5.50m). Heading into this weekend, no collegiate vaulter had cleared either standard, and Skipper stands enters ' 05 as the nation's top-seeded vaulter after he led the 2004 collegiate season rankings, and took second in the 2004 NCAA Indoor Championships (18-4 1/2) last March behind former Husky Brad Walker. UO redshirt junior Jon Derby followed in third place with a 2 1/2-inch indoor personal best (16-7 1/4), and trailed only Skipper and Washington's McKane Lee (second, 17-1). Oregon junior David Moore competed unattached and took fourth (16-1 1/4) - 5 3/4 inches short of his personal best from ?04. On the women's side, sophomore pole vaulter Emily Enders added fourth (fourth, 12-4), and missed her freshman personal best by 1 1/2 inches. Another pair of unattached Duck entrants - senior Hannah Moore and freshman Kim Calcagno - followed in fifth and 10th places with final clearances of 11-10 and 10-10 1/4, respectively. Overall, Washington All-American Kate Soma won the event (13-3 3/4), ahead of teammates Ashley Wildhaber (12-10) and Stevie Marshalek (third, 12-4). Heading into this week, only three vaulters had cleared the NCAA provisional mark of 12-11 1/2 (3.95m), and the national leader Breanna Everland of Kansas State topped the list at 13-5 1/4 (4.10m).
