St. Clair Nabs Top 10 Finish in First Tournament of the Fall
10/11/05 | Men's Golf
FAIRFAX, Calif. -- Oregon's Justin St. Clair shot a 1-under 70 Tuesday in the final round of the Alister MacKenzie Invitational to finish tied for eighth overall at 3-under 213. As a team, the Ducks gained two spots in the final standings, tying for seventh with San Jose State at 857.
St. Clair, the Thurston High School graduate from Springfield, Ore., earned his fourth career top-10 finish, and his best since tying for fifth at last season's Pac-10 championships.
"We need Justin St. Clair in the lineup," said Oregon coach Steve Nosler of his senior captain who was not among the starting five for the first two events of the fall. "I'm really pleased to get an effort like that out of our team captain. Justin was a little off at the start of the fall and I think even he would admit he wasn't really on his game, but when he's on, he's as steady as any golfer in the Pac-10 and he played like that this week."
Host California won its own event by shooting a final round 287 to finish at 844 overall. Fresno State was second at 847, followed by Purdue at 848. UC Irvine and Michigan tied for fourth at 850, with Stanford sixth at 853.
The Ducks and San Jose State were next at 857, followed by Cal Poly (858), Washington State (862) and Oregon State in 11th at 864.
"If we would have had one more good individual score, we really could have moved up the standings, but as it was, we recovered nicely from a below average opening round," said Nosler. "But we need to identify a fourth player who we can count on consistently because we haven't had that yet this fall."
Oregon also got a top 20 performance from Gregg LaVoie, who tied for 20th at 213 after shooting a 1-over 73 Tuesday. It was the fifth top-25 finish in the last six tournaments for the senior from Pasco, Wash., dating back to last season.
Duck sophomore Joey Benedetti fired a final round 70 to finish tied for 46th at 220. Sophomore Derek Sipe also recorded a 220, but struggled with a 78 Tuesday.
Oregon closes out the fall season next Monday and Tuesday at The Prestige.
