Softball Snaps Skid With Ninth Inning Scoring Rally
02/26/05 | Softball
COLUMBUS, Ga. ? It took eight full innings, but the 18th-ranked University of Oregon softball team found its offense, scoring five runs with two outs in the top of the ninth inning to defeat Florida Atlantic, 5-0, at the NFCA Leadoff Classic in Columbus, Ga., Saturday afternoon. With the win, Oregon improves to 7-6 overall this season while the Owls fall to 6-16.
"I thought we kept battling and continued to play strong defense," Oregon head coach Kathy Arendsen said. "And when we needed it, our offense came through in a big way. I thought Amy [Harris] threw a tremendous ball game for us."
Sophomore designated player Ann Marie Topps began the scoring rally with an RBI double to score pinch runner Ani Nyhus. Senior Erin Goodell then added to the lead with an RBI through the left side and Suzie Barnes made it 3-0 with a double to left center field. Freshmam Lovena Chaput made it a comfortable, 5-0, with a two-run home run over the right field fence. Chaput finished the game 3-for-4 with a single, a double, a home run and an intentional walk.
Junior pitcher Amy Harris (3-2) battled Florida Atlantic starter Ashley Greene (1-4) through seven innings, striking out seven batters and allowing five hits. Harris finished the game with a season-high nine strikeouts and allowed four walks and five hits.
In the top of the eighth inning, sophomore Suzie Barnes was placed on second base as per the international tiebreaker rule. Green then walked Chaput, who had doubled and singled earlier in the game. Junior shortstop Breanne Sabol reached on a fielders choice to load the bases, but Florida Atlantic used a double play in the Ducks' next at bat and a fly out by Dani Baird to fend off Oregon's offense.
Florida Atlantic capitalized on an eighth-inning Oregon error to also load the bases, but the Ducks used a double play of their own as well as a fly out by designated player Jessica Braggins to force a ninth inning.
