Softball Shuts Down Towson
03/19/05 | Softball
SAN DIEGO, Calif. ? Senior pitcher Lindsey Kontra allowed just two hits to pick up her first victory of the season ? a 2-0 win over Towson at the San Diego State Tournament Saturday evening. Junior Amy Harris relieved Kontra in the fifth inning and retired nine of 10 batters to earn her first save of the season and help improve the University of Oregon softball team to 14-9 overall this season. Towson falls to 7-10 overall.
Harris is 2-1 with a save in tournament play this weekend and currently has 30 strikeouts while allowing just one run.
"We've been playing very consistent defense throughout the weekend and I'm very pleased with that," Oregon head coach Kathy Arendsen said. "And tonight we had some big hits in key situations to help another great pitching performance."
Offensively, junior shortstop Breanne Sabol led the Ducks vs. Towson, finishing the game 2-for-3 with a run scored and the go-ahead RBI.
Oregon loaded the bases with one out in the third inning after back-to-back bunt singles by Lovena Chaput and Suzie Barnes. Towson pitcher Jess Wides then walked Duck first baseman Beth Boskovich to load the bases, but the Towson defense put together consecutive outs to leave three Oregon runners stranded.
The Oregon offense capitalized in the next inning after senior Ashley Richards hit a one-out double and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Erin Goodell. Sabol put the Ducks ahead 1-0 with a line-drive triple that scored Richards and Oregon went ahead 2-0 when Sabol scored on an error by Towson first baseman Samantha Schaukowitch.
The Duck pitching staff shut down Towson the rest of the way to secure the shutout and improve to 3-1 in tournament play. Oregon faces Longwood Sunday morning at 9 a.m. and concludes the tournament vs. host San Diego State at 2 p.m.
