Jordan Just Misses Pentathlon PR in Idaho
03/05/05 | Track and Field
MOSCOW, Idaho ? In the University of Idaho's McDonald's Last Chance Saturday, junior Lauryn Jordan missed improving her pentathlon season best by only 15 points and took second with 3,879 points behind Texas-San Antonio's Ryanne Dupree (first, 3,979).
Jordan logged indoor bests in the first event, the 60 hurdles (9.13), and the last two events, the long jump (19-11 1/2) and 800 (2:34.92). However, the first-year transfer from San Joaquin Delta Community College missed a chance at a personal best score with marks in the high jump (5-5) and shot put (41-0 1/2) that were shy of her season bests of 5-8 and 42-0.
Heading into the weekend, Jordan ranked 19th nationally with her best and NCAA provisional tally of 3,894 points from last weekend's Mountain Pacific Championships in Seattle.
“Lauryn was a little tired after last weekend, but she wanted another shot at nationals,” Oregon assistant coach Rock Light said. “She gave a valiant try, and improved in the areas she needed to. Her long jump was probably only 6-7 inches off qualifying for nationals in the open event so that was a great effort. However, she didn't get the scores we expected in what are normally her most consistent events. She's had a good first season as a Duck and is on pace to make it outdoors to NCAA's in the heptathlon.
Jordan's long jump Saturday moved her to first all-time for UO ahead of Amanda Brown (first, 19-10 1/4, 2004) and Camille Jamposky (second, 19-6 1/2, 1988). She also ended the season ranked second on the school all-time pentathlon list behind Abby Andrus (3,908, 2004) who made an NCAA trip last season.

For those unfamiliar with the NCAA indoor qualifying system, athletes qualify for the collegiate finale based on their indoor season bests. The NCAA championships committee designates an automatic qualifying mark that if athletes attain in 2005 automatically qualifies them for the NCAA Championships, Fri.-Sat., March 11-12 in Fayetteville, Ark.
Since most individual event fields (normally 12-17 for individual events, 11-13 for relays) will not fill with automatic qualifiers, a second NCAA provisional mark is used to add the top remaining marks from this season. Both NCAA men's and women's fields feature 270 entrants.
Two Duck men led this week's national collegiate lists with NCAA automatic marks ? senior long jumper Leonidas Watson (25-11) and sophomore pole vaulter Tommy Skipper (18-6 3/4). Junior Matt Scherer joined the automatic list Saturday at Iowa State with a school record in the 400 (45.95), and added another school record and NCAA automatic mark in his anchor on the 4x400 (3:04.17). Redshirt senior Eric Logsdon is an automatic qualifier in both the 3,000 (ninth, 7:54.29) and 5,000 (eighth, 13:49.99), and junior Eric Mitchum is a virtual lock to make his second NCAA appearance in the 60 hurdles with his NCAA provisional time (7.74) that ranked him fifth nationally last weekend.
Other Ducks with various chances of qualifying with their current season bests and NCAA provisional marks include junior decathlete Ryan Voge (heptathlon, ninth, 5,445), redshirt senior Laura Harmon (5,000, 15th, 16:18.56) and the women's distance medley of redshirt junior Sara Schaaf, senior Sofie Abildtrup, freshman Kasey Harwood and Harmon (11th, 11:27.77).

After this weekend, a list of actual NCAA qualifiers will be posted on the www.NCAAsports.com website early Monday evening before 6 pm PT.
