Ducks Tied for Second in Tough Field at Karsten
04/01/05 | Women's Golf
TEMPE, Ariz. -- Four Ducks were among the top 10 individuals as the Oregon women's golf team finished in a tie for second following the opening round of the Ping/ASU Invitational, played Friday on a windswept 6,230-yard, par-72 Karsten Golf Course. The unranked Ducks finished the day with a better score than eight top-25 teams.
Senior Johnna Nealy shot a 1-over 73 for Oregon and was tied for seventh, while teammates Kim McCready, Erin Andrews and Victoria Wenslow were all at 2-over 74 and tied for 10th.
Nealy, a senior from Grants Pass, Ore., recorded birdies on the 14th and 17th holes to counter bogeys on Nos.1, 2 and 7 for her 1-over round. McCready and Andrews each had two birdies and four bogeys to go along with 12 pars. Wenslow, a freshman from Bunkeflostrand, Sweden, had three bogeys, but birdied her 17th hole to climb back to plus-2, which matched her lowest round of the season.
"It was fun to see them play a solid round of golf and it was awesome to watch them compete like they did with UCLA and USC," said Oregon coach Shannon Rouillard. "We got off to a good start like we talked about in our team meeting and put ourselves in good position going into the second round. I'm just really proud of them."
No. 2 UCLA shot a 3-over 291 and led Oregon and No. 7 Arizona State by four shots. California was fourth at 297, followed by No. 5 Pepperdine at 302. No. 12 New Mexico, No. 18 USC and No. 24 Tulsa were tied for sixth at 303. No. 8 Washington, No. 22 Texas and No. 20 Stanford were tied for ninth at 305. No. 19 Arizona had the most trouble with the breezy conditions and was tied for 13th at 310.
Individually, only three golfers broke par on a course that usually yields plenty of red numbers. But the wind kept leaders Susie Mathews of UCLA and Louise Stahle of Arizona State to rounds of 2-under 70. Amie Cochran of UCLA, at 1-under, was the only other golfer to break par Friday.
The second of three rounds will be played Saturday.
