Softball Makes History With Howe Field Sweep Of No. 7 UCLA
04/02/05 | Softball
EUGENE ? The University of Oregon softball team made a little bit of history Saturday afternoon, sweeping the defending national champion and seventh-ranked UCLA Bruins at Howe Field for the first time in school history. Oregon took game one, 3-1, before winning the second game 2-1 to improve to 22-10 overall, 2-1 Pacific-10 Conference. With the losses, UCLA drops to 19-9, 0-3.
"I couldn't be happier for our players and our program," Oregon head coach Kathy Arendsen said. "It's important to pick up wins in the Pac-10 and for us to start off with a pair of wins at home over a very tough opponent is a great way for us to start conference play."
Oregon and UCLA played the doubleheader Saturday as opposed to a single game Saturday and Sunday because of the threat of rain. Prior to Saturday, Oregon had defeated the Bruins just three times at Howe Field and just nine times overall. Under third-year head coach Kathy Arendsen, the Ducks have won at Howe Field three times and for the first time in school history have won the season series. The teams will meet later this year at Easton Stadium for a single game.
Junior pitcher Amy Harris improved to 11-4 this season with the game one victory. Harris had five strikeouts and allowed just one run to score. In the second game, freshman Alicia Cook picked up her first conference victory to improve to 6-3 on the year. Cook had four strikeouts and gave up just three hits and walked only two batters. Harris came into relief in the seventh inning and got her second save of the season.
It was another big day offensively for freshman Lovena Chaput who went 3-for-6 with two RBI, a home run, two runs scored and a 1.000 slugging percentage in the two games. Senior catcher Ashley Richards finished the day 2-for-4 with a walk, a home run and an RBI.
In the first game, UCLA pitcher Lisa Dodd gave up a single to Chaput and later walked Beth Boskovich to put runners at first and second for the Ducks in the bottom of the first inning. Sophomore designated player Ann Marie Topps then drove in Chaput with a line drive single and Boskovich scored on the play after a throwing error by UCLA center fielder Tara Henry.
Chaput made it 3-0 by hitting her fourth home run of the season in the third inning and despite a solo home run by Andrea Duran in the sixth inning, Oregon held on for the 3-1 victory after Harris retired the side in the seventh inning.
The Ducks fell behind 1-0 in the second game after a solo home run by Kristen Dedmon in the second inning, but Richards quickly tied the game in the bottom of the inning with a solo home run of her own. It was more of Chaput in the third inning as the freshman from Tualatin drove in shortstop Breanne Sabol with the game-winning RBI single to give the Ducks the lead, 2-1.
Cook shut down UCLA's offense the rest of the way , allowing just three Bruins to reach base in the third, fourth and fifth innings.
Oregon continues Pac-10 play vs. Oregon State Wednesday at 4 p.m.
